I see, my thoughts are that something must have happened somewhere. All the wood and tronics basses that I've played (Around 4 of them), have low action and are very playable, both used and new. Might be personal preference, but I like the playability of wood and tronics basses the most and settled on it. Not an easy feat considering that I have gone through quite a few basses in the past, ranging from Fbasses, USA MTDs, Roscoes, Elricks, Mayones etc. The new one that I ordered from Enrico came nicely setup and I only had to adjust the truss rod as it was probably loosened before flight.

I had a few issued with my WT's. Playability and action were not the issues. Not to say this one didn't get wonky along the way, but lets be fair, I've played wonky Fodera's, Smith's, Roscoes, etc.....

I can't speak to the setup when it left the shop, but the bridge and saddle design of the Zoid just doesn't let the strings get that low compared to most any other bridge. I could look past the fit and finish issues if I could have set up the bass to play well, sadly I could not.

Seems like more of an issue of the basses geometry than the bridge hardware. I loved the look and feel of the ETS bridge mine had, but found it a lot less svelte than the Hipshot equivalent, in terms of adjustability.

Either way, sucks that the bass wasnt playing right for you. I was eyeing that one as well.

I eventually moved mine on as well due to be unable to lower the action. It was just the tiniest bit too high, and it drove me nuts!! I loved that bass though. I've got no issues with my STRs now though, but would love another W&T someday.

Not being familiar with the bridge (I've never played a W&T), would it be possible to recess it? Not that you should have to.

Perhaps this is something that should be brought to the attention of the company -- I wonder if it's inherent to the design or just an issue on a few instruments.

Hey, @77stingray You mentioned wanting/needing a lightweight 6er. I’m certain that Rob Elrick can build you one well under 9lbs, and very possibly closer to 8. His basses have wonderful balance and sound excellent to begin with. IIIRC he’ll do most standard options. He also does shorter scales. He’s very accessible, easy to talk to, and everything is hand built, excepting of course, his offshore lines.

Back to our previously scheduled program.
I’ve had a crush on these W&T basses since I first saw them. One of the few SC types that appeals to me.

For the Zoid I received, the overall bridge assembly was just super tall. There are 3 different pieces of metal below the string break, any and all of them needed to be reduced in size to get closer action.

I considered asking for a partial refund from the seller to pay for machining, but to be honest it kinda ruined the mystique of the brand for me. For a bass that had such hype as a players instrument, having the action unadjustable made me call into question everything else. Especially with the multiple fit and finish problems it had.

Again, qualifier, I have never played one, but, when you pass the $2500 range to 3k or more, I personally don’t expect anything I would call a quirk. Perhaps an ergonomic issue that doesn’t suit me like neck profile or a native tonality I don’t care for. As for the instruments design and functionality, fit and finish, etc I do not expect to see issues of any kind as to the instruments ability to be set up as one so desires. As an example, there is the NS Design Radius bass. It may be a fine bass but the bridge is a newer design that seems odd to me when I look at it and I’ve read others have had issues with intonation and other adjustments.
So unless I liked every other single thing about the instrument, and didn’t losing value modding it, for me, that one would be a hard pass.

I agree in theory. And, I've played more than a few Fodera and Coppolo basses with 'quirks' that it only seems fair to acknowledge that even basses that cost 2-4x as much have idiosyncratic variations as handmade instruments, and are still considered masterful as a brand.

But yeah, if I personally buy a bass for 3 grand and cant get the action where I want it, off it goes.
