world record bass speed

My interpretation was the OP asked the question "how fast are you." I gave him the benefit of the doubt and didn't even consider it to be a challenge or bragging on his part. I view my response as my perspective in answer to his question and, in my book, speed, while cool to a point, is has rather limited value for the role of a bass player, much less value than groove. Most guys that are making a serious living playing are not making it because of their speed.

Yes, speed can be impressive (typically more with guitar than bass I would argue) but watching a pie eating contest for the first time can be be impressive too. However, once you've seen the first one all that follow are much less fascinating.

Check out Billy Sheehan's work. I can't say that his is the fastest, but he definitely runs at a fingerspeed that most can not accomplish.

I can play a lot of Sheehan's work, but I have to use a pick (which I hate). When I play guitar I can make huge BPM times though. A pick coupled with hammer-ons and pull-offs can accomplish amazing things. Tapping adds another demention all together, especially with hammers and pulls.

All of that can be accomplished on the bass as well. Shredding on the bass isn't that much different than shredding on the guitar. You will lose a little time due to the size of the fretboard, but not much.

I want to see some one rip off a few lines with clarity and precision on the bass at max, world record speed.

Is speed necessary? Not usually. It's equal to my owning a Hayabusa. I don't need it, but it's nice to know I have it. It can get me in trouble, but with a little common sense and restraint, I can enjoy the power of speed.

i am getting increasingly tired with some people's atitudes here. The OP asked if there was a record for the worlds fastest bass player, how fast can people here play and how fast he can play. That's it. nothing else.

Why do we have to have the usual groove in the pocket man, its all about the funk and the feel and the melody and the yada yada. Keep that for a thread about feel and groove etc.

I would also like to know if here is a record. Not so i can beat it but just to be able to hear and see it being done.

....

ok, for ANYONE who WANTS to know there is a record can they please contribute to this thread? k thanks...

that said, I would love to know what the metal bass monsters (alex webster, steve digorgio etc) could be 'clocked' at,...

and if you don't like it just don't listen to it! I have no idea how many BPM a song is really... but to hear stuff like the dethklok theme song which is more than just 'the same fast note' it is actually pretty good!

some of the cliff burton stuff can get fast and he does a lot of crazy things with his fingers,... but AFAIK most metallica songs were only around 240 at their fastest? (could be wrong)

Why? Whats the freakin' point of playing fast? To what end would someone even care about such a thing? Seems pretty pointless and self-serving.. But then again some people are still insisting that Hip Hop is "music".. so justforgetaboutit..forgetaboutit Carlo, Vinny..

What´s the freaking point of making world records of any kind ?
I don´t know, but most of the times they are insanely cool.

I would like to know if someone has clocked some hyper speed with bass.

But then again some people are still insisting that Hip Hop is "music"....

hahahahahah!!!!

FAIL!

I wonder if Pino, JMJ, Aaron Mills, Raphael Sadiq, Thundercat, Mike Elazondo, Hub, Adam Blackstone...feel that way too? Maybe you should expose yourself to a wider range of music. That might change your view on what you consider to be music!

I 2nd the Tom Kennedy mention.....and will raise you a Bill Dickens nod! BUT, Matt Garrison with his right hand, 4 finger rake gives VERY good game in terms of speed!!!!
