World String Change Day...

Hiw many hours did you think you get before you want to change ? I often want to change after a few days, but I may put 40 hours on a set in thise 3 days.
I’m gonna say, roughly playing 12-14 hours a week, so that’s around 100 hours of playing time in 8 weeks.

But I have 2 main basses and one of them gets 2/3rds of the playing time. So I’m gonna say, around 70 hours of playing before I feel the need to change them.

I used to be in an R&B horn band with a good bit of slap style and several outdoor 90-minute shows. Definitely went through strings more often on that gig.

But these days, beteeen next to no slap-style playing (that I miss terribly…:D) and trying to lighten up my touch, I do believe I’m getting a little longer life from strings.

40 hours in 3 days? That's over 13 hours per day, wow!
I estimate that a set of rounds last me about 40 hours in the winter and less in the summer. I clock these hours in roughly a month.

Stopping the slap also seemed to help me get a bit longer life. Nothing crazy. Maybe an extra 5 to 10 hours. Thats enough for to notice though. Keeping my hands super clean doesn't even extend my string life that long.

Yeah I usually change strings on Thursday or Friday morning and play Fri, sat and Sun all day. I started around 8 this morning and I likely won't stop (I do take small breaks) until bed time. Even when I'm watching TV in the evenings, I usually have a bass in my hands working on whetever song or peice of theory I was last working on that day.
I quit for a few years and came back and it's sucked me in big time.
By the end of the weekend, my strings are usually well on their way to being dead. I force myself to keep a set for at least a week. I'd change strings every day if I could afford it.
I played metal almost exclusively for nearly 3 decides and have so many songs, even whole genres, I completely overlooked.
Right now I'm on a funk bender and it's addictive! I just wish strings would last longer. People say Dr string last a good while, but it doesn't seem like it to me, but, apparently they do, I'm just playing a lot right now.

D'Addario says today (June 6th) is World String Change Day. :hyper:

Rounds players, sorry for the extra expense.

Flats players, please carry on. :D
I've probably averaged a string change ( rounds) about every 2 months for the last 40 years. My new JB came with a new set of flats, the first bass I've owned with flats in almost 50 years. We will see as I'm still working with my amp EQ to get it dialed in. Right now I have a fat bottom and some clack. HPF has helped a lot but I think I'm still a tad short on the low mids. I know for $24 I can solve this problem if you get my drift.

Seems like you’re trying to make these flats sound like your well-honed rounds sound. If you want rounds, just get rounds. OTOH, first step back and listen to your new (old really) sound with amp flat. Maybe with some easy tweaks you’ll find another sound you like too.

I hear you. As said, I just got it this bass and haven't had too much time with it. I like the bass overall and I'll get the tone I'm looking for,

I also have to alter my plucking technique especially on the E string. I'm getting a thump from my plucking finger hitting the B string. I'm also having trouble muting which may be more of an issue than anything else.

Thanks for your post and info.

Tempting it may be, but no can do. Installed GHS Balanced Nickels on the Nordy Cat bass on New Years Day. They're barely settled in because I spent most of the winter and spring on the StingRay. I take the Cat bass to Ari Cap's Jamerson June & July when it begins on Thursday. The Cat bass' deep cut + NordyMute should get me most of the way there IMO.

Didn't know this was a thing and I am a D' Addario faithful for years...none the less I do play flats now and changed them earlier this week so respectfully I guess I'll be sitting this string change day out this year...

I honestly might change ‘em. A few weeks ago GC sent me a reminder that I had $10 in bonus money to use. So I browsed their website and found a set of D’Addario EPS165 ProSteel 45-105 strings listed for $8.97. I added it to my cart but it showed Backorder. I placed the order and they arrived yesterday! Brand new, unopened and undamaged.

After paying for shipping and applying the $10 bonus cash I paid $5.41. I’m ecstatic. I might put them on my Peavey Fury IV soon. I’m not loving the DR Fat Beams 105 E-string that’s on it now; not sure if I installed it incorrectly but it’s a little deader than the others.
