Yes. This. I don't know how many times I have said, "Okay, I'm done," in my quest for tone and the accompanying pedals and basses to give me that tone in my head that I'm seeking. Only to buy more pedals a month or two later. Because the quest never REALLY ends. And even if it DOES end and you're satisfied at some point, YOUR taste will likely change at some point, as mine has recently. And thus the quest begins again. I have made peace with having to change a pedal or two from time to time to suit the situation. I discovered my One Control Sonic Silver Peg about a week ago and thought, "Finally! The search is over!" Except it's not. This morning I ordered an overdrive pedal which I hope will complement it. My wife doesn't even ask what I'm doing anymore when a pedal shows up in the mail because she knows I'm constantly buying and selling.

Yes, I’m happy and I enjoy playing with this preamp. You can’t go wrong with the BDI21 it looks ugly but the tone that it gives is worth it. But now I think it’s time to upgrade my bdi21 and get a tone hammer.

Guys need some help, Your advice is appreciated. I got a Fairfield Barbershop and not sure where will I put it in the chain. Before or after the spark?

That depends. Do you want the Spark to drive the Fairfield harder? Like, give it more gain? Then put the Spark before the Fairfield. If you want the Spark to just make the Fairfield louder, put the Spark after it.

I've never owned a Barbershop, so take my input for what it's worth. But generally speaking, if you have a drive pedal of some kind (overdrive, distortion, fuzz), when you put a boost in front of it it doesn't make it much louder, it hits the pedal harder and gives it more gain/drive. If you want the boost to give you an actual VOLUME boost, it needs to go after gain pedals.

Yessir. That's another good point. Just try it out and see. Some general principles apply, like above, but different pedals interact differently with each other. Some interact well and others terribly. Especially with drive pedals. Some can stack well together while others sound like muddy garbage. I won't pretend to understand why. But while there are some "rules," so to speak, it's best to just try stuff out and see what sounds best to you. There's no right answer most of the time.

I used to have one a while back . . . and sold it to fund some other needed gear. I really liked the clean side. It's a fantastic, powerful clean preamp. I couldn't get into the AGS side though. But I know it's just me. Lots of folks love it. I have been ampless for a few years now, and I expected the AGS to give me a good drive sound direct and I just couldn't get there. But now that I have an OCSD, I kind of want to try a tonehammer again because I think I might have different, far more positive results. I think my issues with the Tonehammer were largely due to the limitations of what other gear I had at the time.

Got to take my new mini board for its first test drive this morning, and I’m thrilled.

TC Polytune Mini 2 > TC Spectracomp > Joyo Golden Face > Darkglass VMT > One Control Sonic Silver Peg > DSM OCSD. Mounted to a Warwick Rockboard 2.1, powered by a one spot.

As I’ve noted elsewhere, I got sick of lugging the huge board around just to use 2-3 of the pedals. This setup covers most situations I will encounter more than adequately. And the big board will still be there when I want the whole chorus, distortion, wah, fuzz, octave (etc) experience. I highly recommend going small if you haven’t tried it before.

what are you thoughts about that Sonic Silver Peg? I'm not familiar with it. One Control's sites says it's meant to emulate the sound of a 70s SVT. Does the pedal do it justice?

I love it. Very, very much. I've only had it a couple of weeks, and yesterday was the first time I've actually played with it outside of the house. But it's my my new favorite thing. From what I've read, it's supposed to sound like an Ampeg V4-B. I looked that amp up on Youtube, and I would say the sound I can get out of it when I run it direct with my DSM OCSD is very similar to an actual Ampeg V4-B (at least what I'm hearing online). Not quite the same as the mid-scooped SVT-CL. But you can get that too by dialing the mids out more on the pedal. So much of "sound" and "tone" are subjective, and depend on so many personal preferences and other gear factors. But it really shines to me in boost mode. It's the most "Ampeggey" pedal I've ever heard, and I've tried a lot of "Ampeg in a box" pedals over the years. It's perfect when run direct with my DSM OCSD. It's like having a portable SVT fridge. When I used it yesterday with the church's amp, I turned off the OCSD. Felt I didn't really need it. But the SSP performed fantastically. I decided to use it in clean (non-boost) mode and add the VMT when I wanted to add grit, and the two sound great together. I had them on the whole time. Of course, it sounded slightly less "Ampeggey" because my board was running into the church's GK800RB and Hartke aluminum 4x10, but the SSP still colored the tone in a very fantastic way. And there's a lot of power and oomph behind each note with the SSP.

Got a Darkglass Hyper Luminal compressor a few days ago and the Barber Linden EQ last week and used them at church for the first time this morning!

Hyper Luminal in BUS mode, a slight treble and bass boost on the Linden and the Olympic MKIII running pretty much flat. Kicked the PPB on for the occasional bridge for a bit more oomph! Sent to FOH from the Olympic (with cab sim) and it also ran a GK MBP112 powered cab as my fold back. Very, very happy with the sound I had!
