Worship Bass Pedalboards

sunday 4:7.jpg

This past weekend's setup. The Glacial Zenith is new to me but it is staying around. Can go from mild OD to full distortion and the low end stays intact, with a separate boost for before or after the drive. It is honestly a bargain. It could be my entire drive section if I wanted.

This board gets used for both bass and electric, although mostly bass, so I try and pick things that work well with both (other than the Tonehammer).

I have a Tonehammer and like the AGS circuit, but on/off has no way to be set for unity. It adds so much volume to the pedal that I don't see the point of it being on a footswitch. When I use the ACS, I have to completely change the gain/volume to balance the total volume.

Do you use the AGS circuit? I know you like the Glacial Zenith and it is flexible for you. Does it have a similar sound to the AGS circuit? Curious about your experience here?

I cannot get the AGS to work for me because of the issue you're describing, and also, not matter where I have the volume on the pedals or bass before it, I hit the AGS way too hard to sound amplike and be reactive to touch. I run active basses before it, which shouldn't matter really, and the compressor output very low. Still doesn't work the way it should at least in my head. The tonehammer basically an EQ machine/DI for me and very little else - sometimes I don't even use it for DI if the house prefers a J48 or JDI or whatever. It will likely get replaced by a darkglass ultra unit or a shiftline - I use every pedal on this board for bass and the least useful of them is the tonehammer right now.

The AGS on the tonehammer, which granted I probably have never heard correctly, but based on the gain on an actual tonehammer head and my experience with the pedal, is warmer overall than the Glacial Zenith, or the Mayflower for that matter.

The Glacial Zenith can go from very clangy with the shape knob dimed to warm to muted when zeroed. Its OD range is huge. There's a bass cut option too, which is great for when this used for guitar. The boost can be before/after drive and can be used independently as well. Every knob on this thing has a lot of range, it's a great pedal and won't be going anywhere anytime soon.

I decided early on that the AGS wasn't usable as an on/off button. Too much added gain. I usually leave it on all the time but don't push it very hard. When the AGS is on, I adjust the gain down a lot more to get the expected output that I want. I have been mostly effect-less most of the last year using only the JDI or sometimes a Zoom B3 for compression and a little dirt. I am thinking about finishing my pedalboard rebuild that has been languishing on the bench for a year. Last time I used my ToneHammer, I had my signal through the compressor and my DA Edge Activator then into the ToneHammer with the AGS engaged. My Dingwall Combustion sounded incredible. If I dug in I could almost get a slap sound. Here is my board as it sits, but all the power supplies are out of it right now. Pedal Breeders' BIG Board Club Part III

Video I made last year.

Working on my first pedalboard and a complete newbie to pedals in general. I have right now my G30 Wireless into my TC Tuner, then my Mesa Subway Preamp going to PA and also to my Genzler head. I have a new SPectracomp Compressor and not sure if I need to use it before the preamp or after between it and the Stage amp? What is the best and most preferred signal path?

Typical placement would be after the tuner.

Love the Empress
Same! Both the echosystem and the compressor. I'm tempted to try a Cali76 bass deluxe in place of the empress just for a change of pace - I've had this comp for a couple years now. The empress will be hard to beat, though.

The echosystem is a dream machine. Every time I think about selling it to put some money towards a noble or something like that, I build a preset and am reminded of how perfect and easy it is. It has literally everything you could need, twice if run dual delays in series. The only thing that might replace it is a zoia at some point. I'm very happy with my reverb/delay situation.

I had the Empress Comp.. absolutely loved it!! Super clean sounding, to me.. sold it to get a Cali 76CB just for size.. it's amazing in its own right. I love the hpf on the Cali

Here's mine, a nice compact setup. Absolutely love the Cali76 CB compressor, the 'dry' knob really makes it. The Tone Hammer let's me add a bit of hair to our direct-to-desk setup, and the Aftershock lets me dial in some subtle overdrive - and indeed, much more, but want to stick with its softer drive sounds for now. Now I just have to stop GASing and do more practicing!

I have a similar setup but I run the Boss Tuner into the Cali76. I'm curious if you have yours in the order you do because of some sonic reason, and if so, what might it be? I know the Boss pedals act as a buffer, but can't say that I've run into an issue with it in front of the Cali76.

Alright I need some knowledgeable brethren to help me out. I have my first pedals and pedal board hooked up and want to make sure I have it hooked up right. I have as follows with wireless G30- into polytune- Spectracomp compressor- Mesa Subway + preamp/DI using the preamp our into the Aux in on my Genzler 350 head and stack. I will of course use the DI Line out into the church PA's I play at. Is that right or should I be going into the line in on my amp? I have a very small bit of hiss when going into my Genzler head but barely noticeable when not playing . Also seems the volume isn't nearly as loud with the way I have it hooked right now.

I would expect you could try connecting from the unbalanced preamp out or the unbalanced fx send on the Mesa Subway preamp to the front panel input or the aux in on the Genzler 350. Make sure you have all levels down first, then try each option, slowly bringing levels up on both sides. Use the one that works best.

I haven't had any issues when running the tuner into the Cali. The main reason for this order is simply that I can easily check that the compressor's kicking in at the threshold I want while having my signal muted by the tuner. (We have a 'no noodling' policy during sound check; this way I can adjust a little before my line check without bothering anyone.)

A second reason is that I've read that tuners operate a little better with a compressed signal. Haven't noticed any massive difference myself, but it makes sense that the improved sustain given by the compressor is good for tuning. Thirdly, it is often recommended to have a comp as the first thing in your signal chain since it will compress any noise it receives, raising the noise floor. For me this point is mostly academic because I don't think the TU-3 introduces any noticeable noise, but still seems like reasonable advice to follow. Lastly, the Cali76 CB is buffered, so either way I have a buffer as the first thing in my chain.

From the Genzler manual - "AUX IN – A 1/4" stereo line level auxiliary input is provided that sums directly to the main output bus controlled by the MASTER VOLUME control. This input is ideal for practicing with recorded tracks from a CD player, IPOD, or MP-3 player. This input is a tip-ring-sleeve type jack with built-in summing resistors that sum left and right signals when used with a stereo cable. This input will also work with a mono tip-sleeve plug. Adjust the level of the playback source to balance with the bass guitar's volume. "

The aux input appears to not be made to be used like an effects return input, which would bypass the preamp on most amps. I could be wrong about this, but the manual does not say that it was designed for how you have it hooked up.

You're going to need to take the preamp out or the tuner out into the main input of the amp. The tuner out will be nothing but your bass signal, and the preamp out will be the pedal.

Genzler MG350 Manual

Mesa Subway Plus Preamp Manual

Personally speaking since I use the pedal both as a true preamp and a DI at the same time, it is designed in such a way to where I think it is best suited to go into a power amplifier that does not contain its own preamp, or at least one where it can be totally bypassed. Otherwise, you are adding more coloration and gain to your signal and that may not be favorable. Your Genzler head already has a built in fixed HPF and a good EQ section to tweak your stage sound. I do not see where the Mesa would benefit that portion of your chain any further. I suppose you can set the amp totally flat and see what happens! Let us know what you figure out.
