Worship Bass Pedalboards

I am thankful that I can come and plug in to a great system every Sunday. DI/IEM with my own mix. A FOH with 8 flown JBL's (I think) and 4 subs (2 each side) and a sound guy that is there every week, most rehearsals, installed the system and works for the company. We have the same people every week. Everyone plays pro gear. We all know the music. We have decades of experience (especially the old guy on bass) playing and teaching. We have a budget for (some) gear as needed, music and other (Planning Center/Music Stand) subscriptions, clips, etc. Reinforced when I read about less than perfect conditions that some deal with on a regular basis.

That said, I am still envious of some of the sweet boards that some of you have.

Should get the tube comp/DI today. Should be fun to try. Thanks Dave for sharing your resources.
Another option (no tube warmth but I already own it) is just my MG350 head as a DI. Go post so I can use the eq and contour controls. No tube warmth but maybe some eq is all I need. Not quite pedal board friendly, but could work with a little imagination.

Genuine question here... something I've been pondering the last few weeks...

Not so long ago a huge number of folks were raving about the OmniCab Sim... claiming that it was the answer to Life, The Universe and Cabinet Simulation. Then a few folks started saying "Hmmm, mine's a bit hissy sometimes...". And then the pedals seemed to fall off the face of the planet.

I was just wondering why folks all seemed to have ditched them after raving about them just a short while before?

I sold mine because I stopped playing at church, since the preacher refused to understand my explanation of why the board was set up incorrectly in turn causing all the problems he couldn't figure out. If that weren't the case, I'd still have it. It's a fantastic box.
Thought about picking up one just for silent practice

Such is the life of many products in this fast moving time of ours. Two guesses... 1. Market saturation, at least on TB. Those on TB who need/want such a device have already bought one. So, they don't talk about it as much anymore. 2. Latest, greatest. There's always something newer to talk about.

I still have, and use my OCSD sometimes, mostly in the rock band, since I rarely go direct at church. My pedalboards (3) have a revolving cast of characters... My Noble has also been on 'vacation' for a while... also because of the lack of direct gigs. Maybe 3 a year.

There are not many magic bullets, and sometimest the novelty of things blinds us to the compromises a new piece of technology brings. The Pepsi challenge is a good example of this in terms of small sample size.

I should mention this is my perspective from the outside. I have never owned one of the pedals.

I still have mine, but have been looking for something to offer a slightly smaller footprint. I've tried a few different options, with my most recent experiments in IR's for cab simulation not being very fruitful.

I never found the OCSD to be a source of any noise in my signal chain, at least not from the 1/4" output. The headphone out was a bit noisy, but I really never used it. Tried the mini, which was noisy and thus sold. I am looking into the Bass Station that is coming soon. That looks like it will do exactly what I want it to. Those purpose built filters that Daniel designed for the OCSD really are the best sounding cab simulation.

Just that, good box but too hissy for me. Mine is up on Reverb.

It was a game changer for me . . . for a while. Especially when using drive pedals direct. But more often than not I wound up using it into an amp, and found that when I got it dialed in to where I felt it sounded good with drive, it would darken up/muddy my tone too much live. I don't really see the point of using a cab sim into a cab, though that is not necessarily its intended purpose. I switched focus a bit and decided to go with a cleaner, purer, more punchy tone, so I parted ways with the OCSD. I do still miss it at times. It would be nice to have for certain applications. If I didn't need the funds for other purchases, I would have kept it. I don't remember noise being an issue for me. But I did try the mini version a while ago and found it to be unusably noisy.

I'm rebuilding mine. Heres what I'm thinking:

View attachment 3719781

I play both acoustic and bass. So the signal will go input>tuner>placeholder (hyper luminal compressor)> vintage microtubes > Hx effects > a/b switcher > bass to AOU (DARKGLASS B7K...no icon for aou) and acoustic to the DI.

I've ready I can alternate which output it goes from on the HXE but I want it simple. Simple AB for which output is gonna be easy.

looks good, would you ever put the DI under your board? I feel like i would try to do that so i can straighten the dark glass

Seems a lot of folks have had problems with sound technicians! I guess I have from time to time too. But not in the church in Montreal that I attend. We are lucky as we already have a solid sound system (upgrading to a very quality line array next month) and a top notch tech who also works sound for the events (concerts, etc) we host and for other major events in town. I often get compliments on how good the bass sounds—I always say "thanks, but it's not really due to me, it's all b/c of our sound guy, Gideon."

Im literally in the exact same boat as you. Big church, really good audio system, and great sound guys. Ive actually learned so much. When i was at a smaller church, it didnt matter what bass i played. They all sounded the same, tinny and dry, but it sounded like a bass.
As soon as i switched over to the larger church, everything made a difference. The bass i played, if my strings were dead or not, the di, the pick ups. I tried about 6 basses before finally getting to one that the sound techs seemed to like.
Oddly enough, when my old church was at it's peak with great musicians and good sound guys, they hated the same bass that this bigger church likes. They said it sounded too dark, so i got a cheaper bright-sounding bass and they loved it.
If i get a compliment on how the bass sounds, i always just point to the sound guy too. Theyre the ones doing all the mixing
