Worship Bass Pedalboards

SO it looks like I can build a little board that I can just leave at church. Nice. Not going to go crazy (no REDDI for example) but it'll be nice to just bring in my bass and plug in. Thinking something like:

tuner/mute - of course
Rolls PM50s - for the wired IEM's
Empress Bass Compressor - just a great compressor
Just a Radial DI - either the Pro or JDI
One Spot - don't need special power for a simple rig like this
Pedaltrain Nano board
Guitar stand

Around $640 with the Pro DI and $760 with the JDI. I have a Pro that I use with my synth so I'm going to bring that Sunday and try it to see how it sounds.

If I may make an alternative solution if you plan on going the JDI route, check out the Pinstripe Pedal LWDI (Little White DI). It's a little cheaper and has essentially the same transistors as the JDI (one in PCB mounted, the other is not but both are made by Jensen and essentially identical frequency responses)

Instead of putting the JDI on your Nano, why not a small preamp (w/ DI, eq, filters?)

I thought about that, but I’m not sure which one. I’ve gotten by for years without. I like the Genzler r/eq for sure. Wish it had an appropriate out.
Of corse it doesn’t have to necessarily fit a Nano as it will just sit at church. Hmm. Maybe the Genzler r/EQ into the Radial Pro DI…

I thought about something like thy as well. Tube comp to get comp and tube without the REDDI or other brand expense.

I’m not adverse to others, but I do like Genzler products. :cool:
Broughton stuff is hard to come by. The other stuff I could have in a week.

also trying to keep it around $700, but could go a little higher. Trying to respect the church budget a bit.

Messenger’s actually come up quite often…just have to commit to looking.;)

I’ve got you close to your budget, considering you already have the SR tuner and Rolls…wildcard is Messenger $. But I’m eliminating a few items you’d been considering (+more you can sell off/offset, too)…you gain a much more efficient pb, with a LOT more tone control.

I think this sounds like a great time to grab one of the HX Stomps floating around the classifieds to leave at the church. You can ask around here or on the HX thread and I'm sure someone can send you a few patches to get started with. It's fully capable of being a completely standalone simple bass pedalboard/amp/cab/compressor with the option to expand on as desired. Add your favorite di at the end or go with trs->xlr adapter.
On the other hand, Subway+ ? The classic BDDI v2? Here we go down the rabbit hole...

Exactly...rabbit hole. Our guitar player just had the church purchase a Stomp XL for him to leave at church. That's kind of why I'm looking now. We've talked about it in the past, but there's some budget now so I thought let's do it and figure something out. It took a little tweaking, but he is starting to "get" the Stomp and it sounded fine when he used it last week. I did have the thought of well, this could be my "in" to the digital world. Use it at church, if I like it well enough, maybe I explore that for myself as well.

I have found the best way to "dial in" the digital stuff is to start with someone else's patch as a base. The stock patches on any of the digital devices I have used have always been awful for actual practical use. There are some free things available for download and the community is very good for sharing settings too. If you decide to go the HX Stomp route let me know and I will gladly share what I have compiled so far for worship settings. I have some basic stuff for the Boss GT-1b too but the helix sounds are a huge improvement over the older Boss ones. I don't have the Boss GT-1000 Core but it seems to be gaining a little following here recently too. If you want to "plug into the amp and go" maybe add 1 or 2 effects then the Stomp is a great tool for that type of bass player. If you want a huge pedalboard then you probably need to go with the Helix LT for the number of effect blocks you can run.

I have found the best way to dial in digital effects is to buy it . . . try it . . . realize it doesn't sound as good as its analog counterparts . . . and then sell it. But seriously, I have been tempted more than once by the HX Stomp. I have seen it on what I would consider to be some pro-ish boards paired with Nobles or other great tube DI's and it seems to sound really good. I would never use it on its own, only because I'm a tone snob. But I have considered junking everything on my board for an HX Stomp and a Khan or something like that. But I've finally got my board dialed in so well . . . again . . . that I can't see myself parting with my current setup. Even if it means lugging around a 40lb pedalboard. If I were ever to go digital, I'd probably have to go high end, like a Fractal or Quad Cortex. But I could never justify selling my car to buy one of those things. Because then I wouldn't have a ride to church.

That's exactly what I am running HX Stomp -> Khan. I keep pulling out my Tonehammer DI to A/B them but I just can't get the full thick lows out of the Tonehammer that I can out of the SVT sims on the Stomp. The Tonehammer has great definition and is a great pedal but I can't get the sound I hear in my head out of it. I think some of the compressors out there blow away anything in the Stomp but the ones it has are passable for me. Always some sacrifices if you try to do an all in one but I think the Stomp can hold its own as an all in one and get by.

Used my Ampeg SCR DI this week in church for first time. Loved it. I got there early and turned everything on. Got a close proximation in my ears, then turned on FOH and stood there and dialed it in before anyone else got there still.

Very impressed with the true Ampeg tone in a box. Sounds a little better (more Ampeg-y) clean than my SVT-7 Pro. No noise at all; tons of head room to push it if I wanted to. The volume setting was great at only 9 o'clock. I really dig this thing so far.

The grit channel can be dialed pretty close to that SVT pushed sound, but I like the pushed grit sound better on my VMT pedal personally. I will likely find a use for it occasionally though and if I didn't want to carry my whole board, the grit would definitely do the job here and I could eliminate carrying another item by just putting the DI in my bass case.

I really really like this DI a lot and it saves me carrying my amp head every week now. The only drawback is my 810 cab just sits there looking pretty. I will likely bring it back home.

The Quad Cortex seems to be the way to go - eventually. I like the screen and that it has an XLR out, things like that. But as with all of them, It's just way more than I need. I don't use effects much, so even though I'd have my tuner and comp and pre and all that in one, IDK. I guess I don't like that you have to hook it up to a computer/tablet/whatever to do "deep" editing. I want to do it all on the device. And changes on the fly, while doable, aren't the easiest or quickest. Though I seldom change anything. I've had the same compressor settings forever. My REDDI has no preamp so that's simple.
