I use the compressors in the HX Stomp. In reality, I use them because I'm told I'm supposed to, not because I actually hear a difference. I know my total sound is good so I leave it alone.

Essential, no. Preferred, yes. When we did a sound check a while back when I joined my current church we tested the comp engaged and disengaged and they preferred it on always. It adds a low mid presence that everyone liked. Since it's not overly compressed I like the way it reacts with fingers and pick. Plus a really compressed oc2 is a chefs kiss just saying..
I'd say it's essential for me at this point. I'm running the PC-2A, and it's mostly necessary for what it adds to my tone and the feel. It gets it how I envision it in my head.
I went without a compressor a while back and my keyboard guy asked if I could put a compressor on. Not quite sure if he was joking or not. I use the Stomp compressor. Whatever is in IMA's presets.
I really love my source audio atlas, but I could get away without a comp if I weren't using any filters or synth stuff.
But they're also really fun to mess around with. Especially the Atlas: infinite possibilities.

But I realize that FOH WILL OFTEN compress the snot out of whatever I am already compressing.
So, I humbly (and politely) remind the board guru's that I've got some mild compression already going on.

That is pretty much what I did except I went Quad Cortex. Same idea though
I could definitely survive just fine without a compressor
I think the Atlas is highly underrated
I like my Stomp and am quite vested in it with presets and switches and whatnot. I have debated the QC as the interface is very cool. I have read some not so great comments about power issues and maybe not as much stuff for bass, etc. But the concept is cool. It's big. I'd need a board anyway as I have my wireless.
What I notice is the sound guys will compress my bass from the board... and squash my tone. Once in a while I'll remind them that I'll control my compression from my pedal board. I turn off the compressor in the stomp, and use an external compressor for the same reasons Ian Martin Allison mentions in his vid with Janek Gwizdala. My compressor is the only pedal I'll change settings on, and dial knobs is so much easier than going into the menu system in the stomp.
I've been looking at Ian's stacked compressor for a while... then I saw his new vid playing samples of the v2 Cali76 Bass Compressor... and considered getting it... then I saw this --> sample vid by Amos Heller, then I ordered it. The one thing I'm missing on my current compressor is the Dry knob... to bring back a some dynamics in my playing.
I guess I just want it as simple as possible so I go with the Stomp alone. I'm not sure how much compression our FOH is doing. I should ask.

When I started playing EG live in the 90s I was told I should use a compressor. I didn't really understand what it did, couldn't really tell much what it was doing but since this was someone I trusted I used it. The first time I played live with it someone that used to attend our performances regularly told me something was different, that I sounded "more professional". And that was how my 30 year romance with compressors started lol
