This is one reason I really liked the CAPO. It handled going from finger playing to pick playing really well where the mids didn't mega push out.

I want to like the Sushi Box (and live who knows if there's a difference) as it would fit on my board and be powered by my DC7 which would all be handy. But I think the Khan has just a bit more "depth" or something. Sounds more full to me. I think I'll just deal with the inconvenience of the Khan for now. I thought that presets I bought would be better than what I could come up with, but maybe I need to play around with my Stomp some more - especially the compression.
Yeah, I was surprised that Janek, after doing that huge preamp/DI shoot out video, ended up choosing the Colourbox. That made me think it's worth trying, for sure.
I see the colourbox more as a tone shaper that would be useful if you find yourself needing to adjust eq in a very specific way. The innate tone enhancement is nice but pretty mild compared to say the noble or caveman.
I also sold the capo out of preference for the drive tone of the Tone Hammer and its phantom power even though the Capo is superior is almost every other way.
Overall I’m still loving DCX for flats and Tone Hammer for rounds with RNDI for a little extra.
@wolffire99 makes a good point: The Colourbox does not have a specific tone or tone enhancement like a Caveman, Noble, or Sushi would. It is supposed to emulate plugging into a sound desk. Some say Neve but it is decidedly NOT a Neve sound.
The THDI is a great sounding DI. I rarely use it with the AGS on, but it sounds great both ways. The mids just sit differently with the AGS on so you have to be prepared to cut some mids depending on what you are listening through IMO etc. The Capo is a refined version of the THDI IMO.
I love it - if I could only own one of my pedals it would be the colourbox.
I know there’s a subset of talkbassers who judge gear by a printed spec sheet, and if you’re one of them you won’t like it… the HPF isn’t optimised for bass and the drive sound on bass isn’t amazing straight into a PA…
What I like about it is the sound of the transformers - the pre stages seem to glue everything together - the eq is powerful and sounds nice for broad tone shaping.
Similar to how some people put a valve preamp at the end of the chain I like the sound of transformers - on Sunday I was playing via IEM and instantly could tell it was off.
It’s good.
Also can feed pa and amp at same time. So I can practice into my amps return at home and send to desk and same sound at church.
Does it have a neve sound?. No idea, never played through a neve desk. Would a RNDI do the same thing soundwise in a simpler package? Maybe, not heard it.
Is it my holy grail preamp? No, I shouldn’t have sold my Warwick Hellborg pre - would I swap it for a caveman or whatever the trendy pedal du jour is? Well I’m geek enough to be in the pedal section on talkbass - so ild try them but not expect to want them.
Was i surprised Janek picked it for his tour of China in that shootout video he made - not at all - like I said, it’s good in an unassuming way.
Was I surprised it seems to have ended up perminatly first on his current board (in the last vids I have seen, obv he can change to what he wants and he, like me, isn’t married to any bit of gear regulardless of how forum hyperbole suggests we should engage with gear) : slightly given the amount of pedals he has access too - but then also, owning one I know it’s good, so not surprised.
(And pre-emoting a possible response that someone on here will want to say, If you are the kind of person who can’t live with a pedal with a HPF you may never switch on for bass, it’s not for you)

Virtually everyone here on TB has a HPF that they use or can use in place of the one on the ColourBox. A lot of whinging here about the hpf in the ColourBox but I just use another one. No problem.
Below is my board.
I’ve found myself using the HX One less and less. For the past couple of months it’s basically just been pulling chorus duty and acting as a tuner. On the flip side, I’ve been getting really into the synth bass and put together four presets I really like: octave, chorus, mellow triangle, and aggressive square. Between those, I don’t feel like I really need the HX One anymore.
I’m thinking about swapping it out for a dedicated tuner, but I’m also curious what other effects might be worth trying in its place. I could even pull the HPF off the board or tuck it underneath to open up more space.

As I've posted earlier my board is nearly identical! Just different models for comp and OD. The HX One could be used for your HPF as its default preset and simply things. And I use Elephant Man preset (Memory Man modulated delay) almost every week for ambient moments or softer intros. It adds a nice layer.
It would be great if you wanted to share your MXR Bass Synth preset settings. I just use modifications to the factory presets 4 (for the BMS sound) and 5 (for Tony Levin modulated octaver). I'm not proficient at changing presets live and think I may get the little footswitch.
I had the Stomp on my board for a bit. I started using it for less and less stuff. Originally, I decided to leave it on the board just in case since it's nice to have a catch all. But, 'just in case' never came.
It's not that I didn't like the sounds. It's just that I had other pedals that covered what I needed. I still have it, but it's off the board and on the chopping block.
If you're using it as a tuner and a chorus, I think you're already ahead. The chorus is really nice on it. I just don't use chorus a lot--only on Same God---and I have just been putting an Analogman chorus on the ground for that. It's only a few times a year.
As to other options---I don't know if you have a wireless at your church already, but I like having the Shure on my board. It doubles as a tuner.

For those quiet moments what I’ve been doing is to turn off AGS, which lowers both gain and volume (an actual feature in this case lol) put in the chorus and plays soft bass lines. I used to use a shimmer live swell tone I had setup but now we have aux keys on top of normal keys so the pads are more than covered. I’ll try the DMM.
In terms of presets, I do the same for the square sound and octaver sound, those are the sounds I started with. The chorus sound is literally everything off but the mod one up to taste. I’ll redo the triangle/mellow one since that’s the one I had to do from scratch and take a pic.

I like the idea of a wireless! I didn’t consider it because it’s another thing on the board and I never had space.
Here the mellow triangle one. I use it to create a strong foundation, long notes, connected, without standing out. It’s also touch sensitive, at least with my setup.
Today’s assemblage. Just got the Xotic bass preamp to try as drive. As suggested on the thread last week. I liked it.
While I do like low gain drive on the PNP I’m using it as a clean compressor and buffer today. It’s my favorite sounding compressor thus far. Easy to dial in too.
I put the Cog TK421 on the board for the heavier drive. I really like this configuration. Nothing else has changed.
I want to go this route - relying less on my Stomp but wiring everything with external pedals and all that stuff scare me. Different cables, power, amplitude, etc…ugh so much to learn. So much to buy.
Used this setting in two songs and it worked well. I do think I really need the footswitch to change presets though. I went between this and distorted electric bass but ideally I would like to go between presets and to electric seamlessly. With preset mode I think it’s one or the other. Or you have to be much more talented than me tap dancing lol
