Worship Bass Pedalboards

I bought a bass micro synth to use for our Christmas services this year as we are playing a lot of bethel songs.

I spent time today creating a new patch on my helix so I can incorporate the micro synth. This one uses the tone hammer clone in the helix.

I’m really tempted to make a small pedal board now so I can leave my helix set up in my music room. Right now I use the helix as an audio interface and I often have multiple instruments plugged into it. Taking it out every Sunday is kind of a pain and it’s a lot bigger than I want to deal with moving.

I still have a sonic research turbo tuner and the bass micro synth coming. I’m thinking maybe pairing those with a Darkglass alpha omicron and a rndi for a relatively small board. I’m open to suggestions for what to use as my preamp.

Currently in my helix I typically use the regal preamp which is a noble clone. I like it. I’ve also used the SVT pro a lot and the tone hammer clone. I’ve been happy with all of these but I think the regal is probably my favorite.

FWIW I used to use the TH model in the stomp but I find the pedal easier to tune and couldn’t be happier with it.

I wanted the DCX directly connected to the passive pickups. Tuner later in the chain is more of a kill switch. Just a last minute change up during assembly last night.

The Lull is excellent. @NickyBass steered me into the Lull during my 5-string search. Good move. I like P basses, the Lull P5 is lightweight and 35" scale. Four songs were in the Key of D, so that worked. I sent the P5 to the Lull shop for a check-up and they sent me this hoodie when they shipped it back (see pic).

On the preamp front: We have two full time sound/tech staff with a fairly complex audio/video thing. During rehearsal I let them know I got this new (expensive) Origin Fifteen Bassrig and wanted to check the amp sim and/or cab sim (which can be turned off on this Fifteen). We sound checked the Fifteen's amplifier tone, then added cab sim, then turned it off and went with the DCX direct console tone. They immediately preferred the DCX Bass. After service they took a picture of the DCX and may be getting for the church. So much for my new pedal day!

HOW TO MAKE AUDIO AND VIDEO RECORDINGS AT CHURCH & HOME

LIVE AT CHURCH
Below are quick tips on how to capture video and audio at church via the in ear monitor (IEM) system. I use the IK Multimedia Rig HD2 (see pic below) I purchased via Facebook Marketplace for $30.

See steps below.

• Run a line out from the monitor mixer into a the iRig HD2 input. You may need a stereo (tip/ring) cord to TRS 1/4" (see pic below).
• Run the iRig HD2 output to iPhone 15 mounted on a tripod.
• Press record

This process captures the audio from monitor out and video from iPhone. This saves as a video with audio on your iPhone that you can edit and post to socials like Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, etc. No fancy video editing software needed. Just make sure the in ear monitor mix is good. Sometimes I had the vocals or guitar too high.

HOME VIDEOS
I use the same rig at home to make videos. See the steps below.

• From pedal board out into my Audient iD14 Interface.
• iD14 interface to GarageBand.
• From iD14 headphone output to iRig HD2 input.
• iRig HD2 output to iPhone 15.
• iPhone 15 rear camera on a tripod with a @SnapyLens to view what I am recording on the rear camera.
• Press record - it captures the audio from iD14 and video from iPhone.

I record everything live, no touch ups in GarageBand because I don’t use it to record, only my iPhone. Simple, quick, no video editing.

I’ve also been doing more recording in daw for myself and others and realizing just how much you can do with only a para eq and a hpf/lpf.

I'd also eventually consider something like a handheld stereo Zoom/Tascam taking a line from the mixer or capturing room sound from the audience, then syncing the audio to the iPhone video later in a DAW (I've never tried that in iOS GarageBand though). More work yes but usually noticably better audio.

It works and I see why it’s popular but Ive refused to build the classic combo this long! I’ve used them on house boards, and I finally have a tonehammer to mess around with on my own time, but it’s not mounted to anything… yet.

It will be. There is something intoxicating about the THDI. I’ve seen many guys sell it and then keep coming back. It is just pure tone goodness.

I know I’ve thought about going back to pedals, but the sale of my Khan has put me more firmly in the “sticking with the Stomp” camp. It’s paid for. It sounds great in my situations. It’s easy. Sounded great again today with the IMA ”Ultimate DI” preset.

I haven’t spent much time at all with that one. Maybe I’ll run the sadowsky modern through it this week just cuz I can… I’ll have to edit it and add in a chorus though for sure.

My local pedal store, Knox Guitars (nice Christian family run small shop, store on Reverb, as well), is a JHS dealer and has the Kilt 10 in stock and on sale. But they are not open today or tomorrow. I'm think I will trade my V2 for the 10 and give it a go.

In other news, being an Origin Effects fanboi, acquired the new Origin Bassrig Fifteen B-15 amp-in-a-box and think I will try it this Sunday. The 1x15 cabsim has that notable bass roll-off but I'm thinking that might be good in a big PA and slot in the bass better? With sales tax, the Fifteen is way expensive. Now sold out on Sweetwater, and mine is returnable.

In more news, got the JHS Colourbox 10 for a second try. On sale and returnable from Sweetwater. Also talked to the nice people at Trickfish and they are sending me their Minnow preamp/DI to try out for 7 days. They gave me a holiday discount, as well. I've been wanting to get into a nice clean pre/DI. But every time I go back to the Tone Hammer, its still works quite well.

Got the Kilt 10. It definitely offers more lower gain drive settings that seem quite useable. However, as discussed below, I think I will use the DCX for my occasional OD needs. Our tech staff loved the DCX when I used it as a clean EQ pre last week.

Did a lot of analysis between preamps as I've been tone seeking a more refined clean pro sound: the Tone Hammer, DCX Bass, JHS Colourbox 10, Trickfish Minnow, and Origin Bassrig Fifteen. I ended up selecting the Trickfish Minnow and am seeing the value of their lovely 4-band EQ. Still keeping the DCX on the board for light saturation or OD duties. The Tone Hammer is sold and returned the Colourbox and Bassrig to Sweetwater. Trickfish currently has a holiday discount on the Minnow and allows returns, FYI. (Still hunting a Noble.....)

Updated assemblage. The Minnow provides mute and tuner out, so the tuner is no longer on the board, plugged into the Minnow and sitting on the floor in monitor mode and battery powered. The input buffer is now provided by the DCX.

What is the signal chain? Is it: DCX - Subsonic - Strymon - JHS pulp'n'peel - Minnow?

If it is, what consideration made you to put octaver after overdrive?...and compressor after delay?
