Billy Squier's first hit that I recall, "You Should be High, Love" was co-written by hit-factory writer Desmond Childs. His next album, "Don't Say No," had a legitimate hit with "In the Dark," which was actually a pretty decent rock song. It had two additional medium quality rock songs, "My Kind of Lover," and "Lonely is the Night." These were all solid offerings, but he kind of lucked out to get as much airplay and stardom out of that song suite, especially considering the other hit from that album was the abysmal "The Stroke."
His follow up to all that success, "Emotions in Motion," contained the extremely annoying, "Everybody Wants You."
A case could be made that the music world was getting a bit of Billy Squier fatigue around the time that horrible video for "Rock me Tonight" came out, and his songwriting was quite formulaic, aimed at hitmaking; repetitive, easy-to-remember choruses, and largely upbeat melodies.
I'm not saying Squier wasn't talented; that is, of course subjective, but I think his career was destined to head a bit downwards at exactly the time that video was released. Is it reasonable to assume that video killed his career? Sure; I think a case could be made, but personally I don't think that's what happened at all. The radio pounded us relentlessly with Squier and tour-mates Def Leppard, who countered the burnout by taking 3 years to make their next album, including a car accident that took their drummer's arm, and some seriously radio-friendly material that saved them. That era of 80s rock was dominated by the music industry moving in a lot of directions, and if you had a mainstream rock hit, lucky you. Some of the biggest names in rock couldn't get airplay to save their lives.

I also like this period for Rush; in fact the first 16 bars of "Big Money" is one of my favorite pieces of Rush music out of all of it. But their videos coming out of that time were terrible. All of them. Plus Geddy's hair was really terrible at that point; it looked like some kind of winter hat.
I've noticed in retrospect that a great deal of 80s pop art was over-the-top homoerotic. It didn't bother me then and it doesn't now, but when I look back and see so much of it I do wonder whether it was being done on purpose at the time. For what reason I couldn't say. But to your point, that video may have gone a bridge too far.

We've listened to this song every Friday at work since it came out. It's a national treasure!

And where did they find imaginary lefthanded trombones and saxophones? Those kind of props are pricey!
Also wasn't aware that pro session bassists lick their thumbs when slapping. Must improve the tone......you know......coefficient of friction and all that stuff.
Every friday morning, I roll out of bed, and immediately play this song for my girlfriend. It's become a ritual and I don't think I could start my Friday mornings without it.
