Would you consider this overplaying the bass line?

On the album that line is dead-sparse, like seldom more than the root. But it's with a horn section and nineteen other overdubs.
In a trio like you have here, it's a different rendition. You can't worry about overplaying. Just listen to your bandmates, and go be yourself.

I sometimes wonder if a bass and drum / vocal duo could work, (not drum and bass music. Real music just with those two instruments as a duo). But I think it'd take virtuoso level chops to pull if off and a lot of tapping skill to boot.
The whole issue of "overplaying" is one I think about a lot and, to me, you're not overplaying at all. A much busier rendition (but one that I love): Superstition - YouTube
Well done - I'm generally not a slap fan as I think that it tends to get overused, but not in your case. One thing you might try - for the signature unison riff, maybe play it up an octave??
Context is everything. Like others have mentioned, a three piece with no keyboards, so somebody has to step up. Also, if making the song your own, then have it. My band does this song and we have a keyboard player, so I would be stepping on him with some of your fills, but it sounds great in your jam.
What you played definitely served the song and kicked it up a little bit. I like it a lot.

Actually, I'd love to see what you could do with "I Wish". That's my favorite Stevie Wonder song; especially the bass line!

One other thing that I'd add - I spent a few years playing in a trio and found that use of an octave pedal really helped sometimes - I used it very sparingly, with just a touch of the octave up turned on, it really helped fill out the sound especially when the guitarist soloed. I'm in a 2 guitar band now and don't use it.

IMHO that's not overplaying at all... have you heard what flea did with this tune.. In a 1 guitar, bass, drum band overplaying is good.
