I really think those of you who are saying "no way because x,y,z" are overthinking it. I's a casual party. Not a big deal.

It could be serious hell since it is his wife's boss's party and the OP admits he is not comfortable jamming or improvising...If he were a gutar player I would want to be there just for the giggles.Do it. I’ve done dozens of gigs like this and the vast majority of times they’ve gone quite well. Granted, they can be heaven or hell, but even if it’s hell it’s not serious hell. I’m always ready to risk a little potential hell for a litotential heaven.
No, Pass, As soon as I read Mediocre bass club. You are Not Ready, Do more shedding at home with youtube and friendsMy wife’s boss is having his annual party and the regular band’s bassist can’t make it (a trio with no drums (I think)). Through a serious of obscure events they have asked me to sit in. There is no set list and though say they’ll try to find common ground the singer generally decides why to play on the fly.
Now I am in the mediocre bassist club and am certainly no gigging pro with 300 covers under my belt. That being said I can play and know quite a few. My weakness is improv and “jamming” though. I have only played a few live gigs and am considering this as a huge learning experience among friends. Reminds me of an open mic I did once where I played 3 songs I didn’t know. Oh yeah, I have never played with these dudes before and only am vaguely aware of the material they play. They said I can just play as much or as little as I want. Train wreck or possible Gold Star memories? Lol!
A lot of musical cowards in this thread.![]()

I wouldn't. I'd sit with my wife, enjoy her company and that of her co-workers, and let the "hired help" play the music. My wife’s boss is having his annual party and the regular band’s bassist can’t make it (a trio with no drums (I think)). Not at all.
If it were me with my minimal bass talent yet decades of experience on several instruments- improvising and off-the-top covers being a common thing, I would do it. I suspect many others would jump in with thier own skills and experience but NOT; given the OP's self admitted discomfort with jamming and lack of band structure...of any kind.
Yeah, his wife's work party is a great place to show those skills in what sounds to be one of the flakiest musical situations ever assembled
said as a member of the penultimate flakiest musical experiments ever.![]()
See if you can contact one of the musicians, to determine what will be performed. That may help. Even if you can't, I'd suggest doing it. You can learn from experiences both good and bad.
