I was curious that you started the thread with the quitting topic but didn’t get into the details why, then asked if we’d take the gig. I was just wondering out loud why you quit and if this particular group and set list would alleviate your concerns about gigging. I auditioned for a band with a similar setlist just pre-Covid but they didn’t take me. They were established and needed someone to step in within a few weeks. I wasn’t up to the task. They were super serious as well and gave me the impression being in that band was a job. My hesitations about gigging almost always come down to who I’m gigging with. A good setlist is a close second.

I don't even play upright and I'd commit to that gig. That sounds hysterical

Most of the people that identify with this stuff aren't going out to watch live bands a lot (this includes me!) So unless there's venues with built-in crowds that dig this you might find your experience to be like mine, which is playing to sparsely populated rooms and people only getting up to dance to 3 or 4 songs throughout the night.

I found the same results,now I stick with classic rock.

Seems to me that the band should be built for private events (birthdays, weddings, functions, etc), rather than club gigs. Bookings that have the built-in crowd who are ready to party and dance.

You'd really have to find the right club venue to make it work. If clubs were the goal, I'd pass. Playing before a small, apathetic crowd isn't worth leaving the house.

A few weeks ago, a drummer friend of mine stopped by my office and told me he wanted to put together a funk band. Apparently in his mind, I'm the only choice for bass. He asked if I was interested and I didn't commit to anything. I just told him to keep me in the loop.

Fast forward to this past weekend, and he's put together a pretty decent lineup of musicians. He also sent me the potential setlist. Granted, this list is a starting point, but you can see where he's going with it. Sound system is set. 1-2x per month gig starting in 2024, so nothing crazy.

Based on this list of tunes, would you take the gig?

I would take it, but I would insist that he name the band "Jeff" if I were you. Or, for suit and tie gigs, "Jeffrey."

I would probably take that gig, but I would be very quick to point out less than half that set is funk music. A lot of disco and even some rock in there. I mean Boz Scaggs, great as he and his band were, is absolutely not funk.

Other than getting our messaging and branding right, that seems like a fun project.

Needs more James Brown, Parliament, Funkadelic, Mandril, and The Meters to get more funk in the trunk.

Great tunes there...!!! For me though, I'd want a horn section and a KILLER lead vocalist (a crazy good drummer is assumed..).

Sounds like Big Responsibility. If you don't like the way things are going and you want to back out. Are they going to be blaming you and saying hey we 4 months of gigs planned what are we going to do? We don't have someone to take your place.

Give it some serious thought, I say.
