I don't understand criticism of narcissm in the entertainment industry.
Honestly! I don't.
He doesn't just cop James Brown; he cops Little Richard, and pretty much everyone good who went before him. As do most performers. He definitely made it his own, though. As I said, I could go all day without listening to him, but I think he's really one of the greats.
I wonder if Douglas knew beforehand that Prince was going to do that with the guitar he borrowed from Douglas.
Phoey. I don't own any Prince records. Hollow pop music. Fine, but to say Rick James is not 1/10 of Prince? LOL, lack of knowledge. The guy might have been ghetto trash, but he was talented. Rick James was a Multi-instrumentalist, producer, songwriter, singer and performer too.
On a side note, Had he not gone AWOL, I'm curious as to what the Mynah Birds would have done. I mean, being in a band with Buffalo Springfield and Neil Young, would have produced some interesting music. As for Prince, or whatever symbol or name his ego is demanding the public call him this week, you can keep him.
Neither was as good as Jimmy Page.

Carved in Sand, for instance, was great. If he feels he can't do the stuff from 40 years ago justice he feels it's not worth doing when he could be doing something new. He's not a young man, so he must be aware of mortality and time and another chunk of money when he only has so much time left might not be a big motivator.
Turn down? Yes I would! I can probably hit the high notes better than Robert Plant these days, and I would do that tour for free. (If they buy my meals and let me sleep backstage.)
Not my favourite band, but you've got to put it in perspective and compare them with what was around at the same time. They were definitely one of the most interesting bands out there then.

Mammogram is down but I'm working manually
I like Robert Plant and respect his decision as it's his to make. I don't like it, but I respect it. I also loved his performance on Later with Jools Holland the other week as well.
Like many, I grew up with my older brother's records listening and learning to play Led Zep, The Who, Rush and Yes songs on guitar and bass. My brother is a drummer and we spent hours learning LZ songs in the basement. I don't care if his voice isn't that great and if someone proves that 100% of their songs were rip offs.....I'd love to see even a partial version of LZ because of the great memories those songs have for me and my brother.
I remember my brother conquering the drum parts in The Crunge and Fool in the Rain, while my dad found a cheap 12 string so I could play Over the Hills. Even if they changed all the songs it would still be an honor for some of us to see the people that inspired us playing songs that in some way shaped our musical lives. 50% of The Who was still great to me.
It should be noted that I like Prince too, and don't care that his publishing group strong arm purchased 600+ songs years ago from songwriters and records them under whatever symbol he's using every few years as if they were his.

Many musicians here have spent many hours hating on lots of bands that they thought were nothing special, it's what arrogant young musicians do.
And your kids or your sisters kids will hate the Red Hot Chili Peppers (and two dozen other great bands you may think the world of) for their excess.
Rock bands were built on excess.
If you are going to dislike any popular genre of music for it's excess, it's a bit silly.
Country music today is so bloated it's unbelievable.
Opera music has always been over the top.
Hair Metal bands have always played too many notes and posed too much, brought too much gear, props, lights, fireworks, strippers and everything else to the stage.
Progressive Rock was built on excess and overblown too long songs.
Thrash, Death Metal, Screamo are all over the top, which is the point.
Disco was the product of hugely over produced R&B.
Rap music is loaded with bloated artists who want nothing more than to prove daily that they are living large and have ten of everything they could possibly want, their music is as over produced as any has ever been.
The point of Punk was to allow a voice for amateur learning musicians (just like 60's garage bands, nothing new) and to rebel against the over produced 70's rock, but it quickly progressed into an excessive speed and volume contest.
New Wave recordings got fat when the big record producers got a hold of it.
Grunge has been over cooked for fifteen years.
Simple music can be very good, I love lots of very simple old blues artists and their recordings, but most genres of music become excessive over time, until the next great talented kid comes along and creates something new and interesting that takes music in a different direction.......again......for the thousanth time.
The truth is...Jimmy Page, John Paul Jones and John Bonham are very good musicians and Zeppelin was a great example of a 70's blues based rock band.
Additionally, Jimmy Page is very good with recording/arranging/producing music in the studio and created some great records.
Robert Plant was a pretty good singer for a blues rock band.
In my opinion, he was the weakest member of the band, but still better than many famous respected singers.
Just like you, we have all heard some Led Zeppelin songs too many times on the radio, but this is true of many great songs by lots of bands.
Enjoy your time being "above it all" with your personal list of who is really the most awesome of musicians, but there will come a time when some kid will come along and laugh at your list too.
