Wounded Paw - Battering Ram

excane do you know if these circuits are based off of any other fuzz and OD? If so do you know which?

Through my email correspondence with Preston @ Wounded Paw, I never actually asked if it was based on any particular circuit...

I DID tell him how similar I thought the Attack Goat sounded to the Prescription Electronics Depth Charge and this was Preston's response when just generally telling me about the Battering Ram:

"The fuzz section of the Battering Ram is a different sound than the Attack Goat, it's
much more raspy sounding. I've been using it at practices for the last
cupla months while I've been fine tuning it and I think I like it even
more than the Attack Goat."

Thanks.
What are your thoughts so far? (low end loss, OD tones, Fuzz tones, verstitility, etc...)

A few overall thoughts on this pedal...

I am NOT a huge fan of Muff-based fuzzes and when I hit that switch on a fuzz pedal, I want a swarm of bees. The fuzz side of the Ram delivers this and then some.

The "Lo" switch on this pedal is key. When toggled down, it basically sucks out the lows. When it's up, the bass passes through very nicely and almost sounds like you're splitting the signal (depending on how the gain is set with the OD and fuzz)

The OD side can be pretty subtle but it will crank out some real saturated sounds. With the treble boosted it really has a nice grinding tone when played with a pick. Back off the tone a little and fingerstyle sounds great, very articulate. It is also very responsive to your plucking hand attack.

I've found so far you really need to take a little time to set the levels for both sides to get optimal results.

The octave up switch is VERY pronounced and really has some nice sounds when playing high up on the neck. If you hold out a note and let it feed back, it's very similar to a Prescription Experience pedal or similar fuzz/octave up tone.

Came yesterday, here are a couple demo clips:

Clip 3: [Invalid or Expired Link Removed] (achieved by min on OD Drive and Level Knobs. Fuzz on medium/high setting oct down

I'd like to hear more with the settings in clip 4. The rest I find okay.
I agree, with both sides on is where is sounds the best. There is a sparkle to it. Couple of notes: 1) jacks are backwards from normal convention 2) Pedal isn't dual-bypass. You have the OD on, or you have the OD + Fuzz on... the fuzz can't be run solo without mucking with OD settings (and even then it may still impact things). This isn't a negative, just wasn't quite what I was expecting. That said, the fuzz sounds better with the OD running into anyway! :)

I kept trying to ignoring this thread, then I heard the clips. It is on my GAS lis for sure.

That's odd. It's pretty easy to make a dual pedal where you can solo each circuit. Depending on how the circuit works, you might be able to mod it. The always helpful GGG has a wiring diagram: [Invalid or Expired Link Removed]

From Preston @ Wounded Paw about his design:

The way it works is hitting the overdrive stomp switch turns on the
overdrive section. Hitting the fuzz stomp adds the fuzz sound to the
overdrive sound. If you want to use just fuzz you could turn the
overdrive section down I guess. The fuzz section doesn't have much low
end purposely so it's meant to be added to the overdrive sound. Kind of
like how the Attack Goat adds fuzz to the clean sound. The fuzz section
of the Battering Ram is a different sound than the Attack Goat, it's
much more raspy sounding. I've been using it at practices for the last
cupla months while I've been fine tuning it and I think I like it even
more than the Attack Goat.

I agree, the backward jacks are a little weird, but no big deal for me. As he said, you can turn the OD side way down and still get a very "fuzz only" sound.

Cool clips...it's amazing how different this sounds from the clips I recorded. Were you using a passive for these? I was really surprised how well the Ram handles an active...try it if you haven't already :)
