Wow!! How did that happen?

I'd like to say something, but it would likely get me in some trouble. I'll go re-read the OT rules and then get back to you. ("OT" standing for Off Topic, not Old Testament. And yes, I know that Mark is in the New Testament.)

I *can* say this, however:

Forgive my ignorance on the subject but why would a pastor deal with snakes?

I've never seen an imam or a rabi with snakes or whatever.:eyebrow::confused:

I don't know if this is the case here, but usually it's called a "pentecostal" church. I think the belief is that if you have a pure soul and a true connection with god, the snakes will sense it and not bite you.

Didn't work out here though.

I have to be careful with my Stambaugh.

There's a sentence in the Bible that says something to the effect that if someone has enough faith, they can be bitten by poisonous snakes and not be harmed. Generally most folks don't take that literally, but the snake-handler sects take that verse to mean they MUST handle poisonous snakes to show how faithful they are.

Mark 16:18: ...they will pick up serpents with their hands; and if they drink any deadly poison, it will not hurt them; they will lay their hands on the sick, and they will recover.

Snake-handling sects take the verse literally as applying to all true believers. Most Pentecostals are not snake-handlers, it's just a few small churches in some corners of the country.

Indeed, the passage is in the article about halfway through.

"When an ambulance arrived at the church at 8:30 p.m., they were told Coots had gone home, the Middlesboro Police Department said in a news release. Contacted at his house, Coots refused medical treatment.

Emergency workers left about 9:10 p.m. When they returned about an hour later, Coots was dead from a venomous snake bite, police said."

Darwinism at its finest. :rollno:

"And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover."
