Wyn Basses

I have had my Wyn Koa 5-String for a few weeks now and I can't put it down. Very serious basses and such a personable and professional builder - Randy really cares to see that whomever ends up with one of his basses is happy. I just can't say enough...

That is one beautiful bass. He does brilliant work. I think the fact that he spent time learning bass building from Carey Nordstrand shows in his eye for detail. Also his prices are very reasonable for this level of craftsmanship.

Wow, that is a beauty! Reminds me of mine a bit. Randy really does make some amazing instruments! :bassist: :bassist: :bassist: :cool:

They sure look amazing!! :hyper: Still sad though that Randy only makes nech-though basses exclusively.. Give me a Bolt-on anytime :p

You can read Randy's thoughts (and the thoughts on 12 other top luthiers) on this very subject in Bass Gear Magazine issue #9 (the link should go live this week). We had a very interesting discussion on this topic in the Luthiers' Round Table.

Oh, and I'm still very, very much in love with my Wyn 5-string! :bassist: :bassist: :bassist: :cool:

I've had my Wyn bass 5 for about a month; the attached pics are of the bass. It plays so smoothly, the quality of the work is amazing, and it can create some amazing tones with its active and bypass passive settings! Randy is a wonderful person, and he really goes out of his way to build an amazing bass.

Check out this link to the trailer of a documentary that is being made about Randall Wyn Fullmer and his business.

The bass has a 5A quilted maple top, wenge and African mahogany inner body layers, and a figured maple back. The neck is birds eye maple, wenge, and a center strip of bubinga. Nordstrand pups and electronics.

Ill be getting mine in a year...if anyone is near Va dc Id be happy to let you play it. So far been a really cool process working w/ Randy on the woods and design of the instrument. Randy is a great guy to work with and the prices are really reasonable.

I admit this is an older thread, so are the threads on my suit. I just bought a Wyn 6'er, used to belong to Maurice Fitzgerald. This thing is a 'beast'. Looks aside, sonically the bass has great presence. A little on the weighty side and the 19mm spacing I adjusted down to 18mm. The OBP3 and Fatstacks are a good match. String selection may matter only through your own preference of sound. One of the better basses I've owned and I've had plenty.

FWIW I'm talking to Randy about specs for my build right now. I mentioned some typical Wyn dense woods, and he pre warned me that it would weigh 10-12 lbs. He asked if that was an issue and suggested ways he could keep the weight under 9 lbs. Probably the nicest luthier I've ever dealt with.

I got on the 2015 built list. Can hardly wait! :bassist:

My work-in-progress specs for a 5 string currently looks like this:

* Koa, Walnut or similar darker wood full top
* Wenge tone plate
* Swamp Ash body
* Undecided fb (darker to match the top or lighter to contrast the top and match the body?). Not worried about the tonal properties of the fb wood....insignificant to me.
* Nordstrand preamp
* Capped back of headstock

That's about it. Pretty straight forward. Won't go too fancy with the neck...just a standard neck probably, not too many laminations. All work-in-progress....
