Yamaha BB1600 vs BB1000MA

Does anyone know the pickup setup on the bb1000s. Is it only P or is it P-J?

Old Yamahas are not just appreciated, for an unknown reason. They are kind of old, but not old enough to be considered vintage. I would say that the Yamahas have an excellent finger style tone, but playing with a pick of slapping works just fine. I would consider these basses rockbasses. Does the BB1000S have a thru-neck?

That bass is - as far as I can tell from the blurry shot - identical to my bb2000.

I got both Basses - on old BB1600 an a new BB1000MA.

These Basses are IMHO totally different.

Same look, same feel (the BB1000MA weights a bit more), but different Sounds.

The BB1000MA ist made for Rock and Blues. Warm, equal through all frequencies with a emphasis on the mids. Sounds like a Fender P but with more dirt...love that. Good sustain. It's not a slapper or a hifi-type bass.

The BB1600 _is_ a slapper. Very punchy and a fast attack. but short sustain.
Good for Pop, Funk and so on - but not so usable for Rock or heavier music.

During a band session I replaced the BB1000MA with the 1600 and I had to increase the volume and the midrange knobs of my Amp. But still a different sound.

I can use the BB1000MA along with my Fender P Elite I, but not the 1600.

BUT: The J-Pickup of the BB1600 sounds more like a Fender Jazz Bass. No neck pickup - only bridge-pickup all the way open and the sound is great!

Conclusiom:
the BB1000MA is for the belly, the BB1600 for the brain

I have an '84 BB3000S, and it's fantastic. It's been my number one since I bought it. I actually went out with the intention of coming home with a Stu Hamm Urge, but bought the BB instead, best thing I ever did.

Cool. I really enjoy my BB1500A. The neck is a little chunky but I play slow anyway so the extra tone is nice. I tried a BB1000MA and liked the thinner neck - I just couldn't get past the position markers and returned it - I know stupid. Anyway, I am looking for an older Yamaha with a jazz thin neck to complement my BB1500A. I came across a BB1100 that was nice but it had some issues and I was low on cash. Still, if I can find a 1600 or an older 1000 I'll scoop it up. I did see a beatiful 1600 just down the road from me but it sold before I could get my ducks in a row - it was really nice with the wine color sunburst and gold hardware - the owner said he sold it for $300 Still I wouldn't have bought it with out playing it first - even though Yamahas are tanks and more consistantly built than crazy expensive fenders.

i recently got a 1600 off of talkbass and am waiting for it to arrive. i've been wanting one of these forever and one finally popped, my question is this:
can you get replacement hardware for the pickup things that are gold? i plan on getting schaller chrome tuners and it already has a chrome schaller roller bridge, but those gold things around the pickups drive me nuts, haha. thanks.

I can't imagine that anyone would sell actual replacement parts, but I guess you could just unscrew those golden metal bits and send them to someone who does chrome finishes for cars/motorcykles/that kind of stuff, for a refinish.
Make sure to post a review, and lots of pictures, when you recieve the bass in question!

I think if the auction weren't held over a popular spring-break week, I wouldn't have gotten quite as good a deal.

I recently finished a four-song recording project using the BB1600 running direct exclusively - I'll post links to the MP3s as soon as they're available. With both pickups on, it really has a nice, rich sound to it.

The BB1600 definitely has a neck comparible to my Stingray, if not a bit thicker. I also used to have a BB1500A, and it's neck was definitely thinner, more of a Jazz style neck.

The older model Yamahas are TANKS to be sure. Even my more recent 95 RBX 250 can take a pounding.
