Yamaha Club Part II

hi, i have an rbx374 bass and i want to do some upgrades on it..
i want to put a bypass switch on it (active/passive)
just want to check if anyone here have already done that and can give any suggestions..
i want to do this because i like the sound of a passive bass and also my rbx drains out my batteries in just 2-3weeks..
i already emailed yamaha about this but i cant get any help from them..
if anyone has a diagram of the electronics of rbx374 i would appreciate it if you can send it to this email [email protected]

Yamaha BB Club, Yamaha Club.. to which can I sign up? :)

I have a BB605 coming, hopefully I'll be able to pick it up tomorrow. Got a great deal on it, including a HSC. Wasn't really looking for a Yamaha (had my sights on 5-string Fenders, Warwicks & G&L's..) but the specs lined up so and it was a deal.. so here we are. I've been reading a lot of positive things about the BB605's, so my expectations are pretty high. But we'll see, naturally I'll post a review when I get it.

I'm liking the BB (see above). Sounded good at rehearsal, and the best sound came from the EQ being flat and blend centered. The low A (yes, I downtune) needs some getting used to, because the stuff we play is in D and I've always used a 4-string before. The neck on this thing helps though, it's really easy to play and the 19mm string spacing at the bridge helps too.

I'm a bit baffled about the mid switch & pot though, what does it actually do? When you click it on, it sounds like a ludicrous mid boost (pot at min.) and when you turn it up it pretty much sucks everything mid-related out from your tone. Needless to say, I kept it off all the time. I have to fiddle it a bit more to see if there is any usable sounds behind it..

The action on this was pretty high when I got it and there was a bit too much relief on the neck. Tweaked it a bit and now the neck is almost flat, strings lowered (using a Fender set with a tapered A & D) and they don't buzz even when played hard. I think I could get them a bit lower still, but this is more than good enough for playing. And like I wrote above, this thing is _easy_ to play. Thanks Yamaha. :)

that switch&pot is a mid-cut supposedly, and actually it's a sweepable contour. In every position of the knob it cuts a lot of mids and boosts some lows and highs, but those frequencies change as you rotate the knob. I've had a natural BB605 (pictures earlier in this thread) and kind of liked that preamp. It's a separate preamp from the 2-band eq. Yamaha also used to make it in a pedal form, it had Nathan East's signature and it had some more controls, I believe it was the depth and width of the contour.

I sold my 605 few months ago, but then regretted it, now I'm bidding on another one. If I don't get it, I keep my eye on a four string version.

Ok, that explains it. Thanks. :)

Besides that, the 2-band EQ is pretty good IMO, too. Not too much boost or cut and dead quiet. The best band sound came from leaving it flat, but I can see using it while recording or in some other setting. A passive switch would be handy, though.

How much? I've been seeing them lately on C.L. and E-Bay going for $300.00 to $500.00. Really hurts because my wife bought me a fretless one new in '05 and I know she paid $800.00:bawl:

That aside though I really like mine. Right now I have it strung with Rotosound Tru-Bass tapewounds and it really gets a great standup bass sound. Very warm and woody with lots of mwah. When I got it it had round wounds and I've had flats on it too, so type of strings combined with the pre-amp allows you to dial up almost any sound you want which makes it a very versatile bass.

So I guess the answer is yes, just don't pay too much.

I guess i might as well sign up..

My newly acquired BB425 i got from TB'er Peledog. Pretty cool!! I am new to the yamaha stuff, but the build quality is outstanding. Can someone tell me the difference between this bass and the 415's that MF was blowing out? I can't really tell..

gustobassman...So, you got peledog's 425 I see! He has/had Yamaha Club number 321, so I wonder if he's still a member??? :p

Anyway, there are only two significant differences between the 415 and 425 models. The 425 has through-the-body stringing and has a laminate neck with maple & mahogany(?).

I have a wineburst 415 and really like playing it. It's my backup to my Cirrus 5.
