I have the Yamaha BB 2005--which has the NE-1 EQ-- and I've listed it here on TB for sale. There is a link in that thread to a youtube video where I noodle around while going through all the frequencies. You can hear how it allows you to generate ton of tones. If you cut near the lows or low minds, it'll give you kind of a grindy, midish tone. You cut near the 2k hz, and you get that smooth Nathan East tone. I also had the seperate magic box and aside from the complaints expressed here, I like it.

Yamaha NE-1... Anyone?

This is a wonderfully simple and effective device if used properly. First off you have a volume / gain control, then a three position switch that has a shallow notch, a step notch and a flat setting - and then a sweepable frequency control.
I go from bass with active EMG's into the NE-1 with gain adjusted to match my basses output and the freq around 2-3 on the dial ( you'll have to find your setting). If using a shallow notch you get a nice piano bass sound. In the deep setting you get a wonderfull full low end that is tight and just blossums.
You will find that in the flat setting it is as good as if it had true bypass.
Currently I go from the Ne-1 into a a B-max preamp. The combination is very nice due to the warmth created by the loading at the front end.
If I turn down the treble on my P-bass it's a buttery low end that is to die for. Crank up the tone on the bass and its Squire Geddy heaven.
You can find them used and they are hard to beat for the bucks.
I have recorded from bass into it - into the board with great results. Batteries last forever.
If you understand parametric eq and appreciate transparent but effective eq you will love this quality piece of gear.

+1, I take it everywhere, I love what it does, and it's simplicity in use, worth every cent (but I did get it for $55 off the Bay, they have gone up considerably lately)

I bought one - used but mint in box - ten years ago. One of the best purchases of my life. I use it mostly for recording sessions. That pedal saved me a lot of times.
I went through my "Notch Filter" phase a year or so ago. Had the NE1...dumped it because it had no switch. Got an ARTEK (sp?) off reverb for $50....much better and it had a switch. Got a EWS BMC (which is for sale) not really a notch filter, so I didn't like it (more of a slap pedal). I'm just sticking with my Kelling sound varitone circuit in my Lakland JO4.....it seams he has dissapeared off eBay, so.

I picked mine up about 18-years ago on a trade for a Jazz Bass MIM neck that I had lying around. I love using it for both live and recording, and it also sounds great on my guitar too. There is a lot of bellyaching about there being no bypass switch, but that is not how it was designed to be used. It is designed to dial your sound in and forget it. I am pretty sure that was Nathan's spec to the Yamaha engineers. It also doesn't need an AC input because the circuit is so damn minimal that it will take years and years for the battery to expire. Over the years I have replaced the battery 3x.

I feel like a total dummy, but there’s what appears to be a boss style power jack on mine. Fits the plug. It’s also in the diagram in the manual, but it’s never mention as an option to power the pedal.

Someone has modified yours, it appears. Also, your manual shows the output jack, not the power input.
I have had an NE-1 for close to 20 years. Mine came as a free bonus with one of the first Peavey Cirrus 6 string basses that I bought. Previous owner had it in the hard case. I never gave it a chance... maybe spent a few minutes playing with it.
A few days ago, I removed the LaBella LTF (flats) off a dual P that I built, replacing them with DR Hi Beams steels. The LTFs weren't exciting me, and I wanted to see how rounds would sound through the 2 EMGX P pickups. When the Hi Beams didn't thoroughly excite me, I dusted off the NE-1 and was thrilled at the sounds I could get! I was able to get everything from Stingray-ish slap tones to deep reggae P tones, even some Ric-ish sounds.
The NE-1 will be going on my board using a 1Spot battery converter and an effect loop pedal for on/off switching.
I am so glad I kept this during all the times when I was buying and selling gear like a mad man!

i have one and play it with BBNE1, use Deep 6 and yes sound very close enough. i feel NE1 boost low & high, cut mid a bit, so if you slap that volume doesn't jump. Its very musical pedal if you find the right setting. Since its specific pedal for nathan east, youre right that not much sound much option inside NE1 because this pedal only have one goal, close enough to nathan east sound. and i think only BBNE1 & NE1 can do that, very specific huh
