Just noticed this modded one yesterday. I'm tempted to check it out, but have to sell at least 2 other basses before being able to get this one. Beside that, it's modded, don't know what to think of that.

Yamaha Peter Hook Signature Bass

Just noticed this modded one yesterday. I'm tempted to check it out, but have to sell at least 2 other basses before being able to get this one. Beside that, it's modded, don't know what to think of that.
To be fair, that is the older passive version he played before getting the active 1200S, those come up for sale a lot more frequently and they're usually cheaper. It's not really a "rare opportunity" bass in my opinion so you aren't missing out big time if you choose not to get it. Personally I'd be turned off by the mods but they look to have been done fairly well. It's basically a poor man's BB2000.
This thread made me revisit Joy Division. I was 13 when Unknown Pleasures came out and JD is very much fused with any teen angst still present in my subconsciousness. And it probably had a lot to do with my picking up bass at 16. All we listened to were taped copy's of taped copy's, so listening to the remastered versions is interesting. There's so much more going in in those recordings. In my memory there's Ian and Peter and not much more. The drumming is a big part of the sound though. This was a really good band.
Interesting. Peter Hook has gone on record in saying that much of Movement was recorded with his 6-string Shergold.
Great to see all this Peter Hook love here! I wasn't into New Order or Joy Division at the time, I was a kid stuck in jazz/blues/rock land (Jaco, Geddy Less, and John Paul Jones was it for me then), but have grown to really enjoy their stuff since.
A little over half of Movement is the Shergold. Dreams Never End, Chosen Time, Doubts Even Here, Denial, and The Him are all the Shergold.
Truth, Senses, and ICB are the Yamaha BB1200.
$1,200 is a pretty small amount for a new, quality bass these days.
this is the book that comes with the movement definitive edition box set. it IS a bb1200 on movement. and i'm pretty sure it's a bb1200 on temptation too.
The BB1200S makes it's first recorded appearance with Low-Life, correct? PCL was recorded in late 1982, same year as the BB1200S launch, but Hooky isn't seen with one until 1984.
that is my understanding. if he had it before july 1984 i haven't seen evidence of it yet.
Agreed, its not the price tag that I wonder about, more what you get for that price tag. I guess there is nothing special here, for me. It seems like a red BB734 - you get a reversed P pickup, and no bridge pickup for $500 more? That just seems strange to me. I don't knock anyone who would dig this though - more power to them. This is 100% my opinion and no one has to care about that.
I think the preamp is a replication of the original BB1200S preamp but tweaked, but I'm not sure. In the very least I know he wanted it tweaked to have more control over the low end, it could very well just be a modified BB734A preamp. Granted even if it is a full on replication, I don't know if that's truly worth $500. It is a vintage Bass brought out of mothballs. Fender up charges for this sort of thing for seemingly every other model they make.
It is probably my unconscious bias - I expect Fender to do that, but assume Yamaha will jam as much quality as they can into an instrument for as little $$$ as possible. I will also admit I had no idea who Peter Hook was before TalkBass, so I will own that too.
