Wait, the BB800 photo is from December 1980; the NY theft appears to have happened earlier that year (he was photographed at the Hurrah's gig playing a Fender Precision), so maybe the 1200 Plexi was stolen, he bought the 800, and then traded up for the 1200S before PC&L. Weird that he didn't remember having the 1200 Plexi then. Or maybe he thought that was a 600, and he bought an 800 or 1000 in NY. Except he must have had at least two 1200's, one with the pickguard and one which got loaned to Barney and modded with the bridge pup. Arrgh.

As I noted earlier, there are two other functional differences between the BBPH and the BB734a: preamp tweaked to sound more like a 1200S, and lack of a J pickup. And two aesthetic differences, the red paint job and different knobs.
Otherwise it specs out exactly the same as a 734a: same neck, fingerboard, nut, headstock, tuners, body, bridge, etc. Even the pickups are the same, just in reverse configuration, but they're the same pickups.
So no, it's not the same as a BB734a, but it's certainly not all that far away from one, either.
If it didn't say "Peter Hook" on it there's no way they could sell it for $1200 when the 734a sells for $750. In fact, if it didn't say PH on it, I think most people would look at it and ask why Yamaha is even making a bass so close to something already in the lineup.
And yet, I still have to take a second to force myself not click "add to cart."
I read his books a couple months ago, he didn't go into specifics as to what was stolen and what was replaced if I remember correctly. That is actually part of the reason why I even read them, to see if he said anything in there.
I was thinking the pickguard 1200 was stolen, then he bought the 800 in NY. I can see mistaking the 800 for 600, 600 is half of 1200 and it's the budget model of it, it makes sense. When he got back to Manchester, then he had to have got another 1200 because that's what's on Movement, and what he can be seen playing live in 81 and 82.
Yet the way he tells the story he got the 600, then when he got back to Manchester he either upgraded from the 600 to the 1000 to the 1200(S) or he got home and upgraded straight to the 1200S.
How did the story manage to get so twisted I wonder.
I'm pretty sure "pumped full of drugs" is a clue.
he is NOT holding an eb2 in the picture where bernard is holding the bb1200. it looks like bernard's es335.
i've already said this, but in pumped full of drugs when they are playing confusion, bernard is playing a BB2000. look at the bridge pickup.
peter starts the song on a yamaha guitar, but ends it on a bb3000
these aren't their usual guitars, even the black fender strat bernard uses isn't his usual. gillian plays an ibanez am205 here as well, which i haven't seen her use anywhere else.

I don't think so. I just happened to hear him say they were stainless in the video. I think the frets on the PH bass are different than the ones on the other BBs. I have reserved one so hopefully soon I will know.
No, look closer, it is definitely the EB-2. The 335 has white pickup rings and a trapeze tailpiece, and has six strings; the one Hooky is holding clearly has four.
You're right that they aren't playing their usual guitars in Tokyo, but elsewhere when playing Confusion Barney uses a sunburst BB1200.
I think you and hypercarrots have each other confused a bit here. He's talking about the picture of Barney holding the BB1200 (during Confusion), not the live performance of Thieves Like Us.
Right; my point was that seeing the BB1200 on stage at the head of that video didn't mean Hooky hadn't gotten the 1200S yet, but rather that Barney had started using it for Confusion (as seen in the photo), which meant, if anything, that Hooky might have had the 1200S at that point (and left it in the studio). He wasn't using the 1200 anymore.
He’s used other basses live but he says he has used his BB1200S on every song he’s recorded, apart from Blue Monday which featured his Shergold.

That live performance that you're talking about, I think they just did Thieves Like Us that performance (Depeche Mode did People are People, it was a televised thing), so Barney wouldn't have needed the BB1200 for Confusion.
