Well, let's say the neck through does have a little more sustain, just considering the physics. Still the bolt on will give you enough sustain for anything you'll ever need. There is always a joke when I play my last note and let it ring, because my bass just keep ringing long after they click stop on pro-tools!!! It really rings like a piano.
So I actually have the TRB6JP and the TRBJP2 and neither of them have the piezo. JP didn't want them on the newer basses because he never uses that feature.

Hi, everyone.
I’m about to purchase a used TRB1006
It will be my first Yamaha instrument and I’m really ignorant when it comes to Yamaha instruments.
In my search I found that there’s been different generations of TRB 1006 basses, can anyone tell me what are the differences between them, is there an easy way of identify the generation of the bass I’m about to purchase?

Yes and no. I got hold of the schematics on all the models and I converted a TRB1005 into a "P". The circuit board is the same for 4, 5 and 6 strings, but for the non piezo models, they leave out the connector for piezo pickup, and the control pot. They also leave out a number of resistors and caps that manage that particular section.

If you are asking if the preamp section for the magnetic pickups is the same, the answer is "yes".

HOWEVER: there have been three versions of (nearly?) everything: mk1, mk2, and current. The preamps are not common across versions.

There are OBP-3TK,OBP-3SK etc
What fits exactly in my TRB5ii

The earliest models (for example the TRB-P5 / I'm no expert and am referring to my P5) had neck through construction, shorter scale length of about 34", and bridge piezos pickups in addition to the P/J pickups. The earlier models were also made in Japan and the one's I've played besides the one I own have been amazing instruments...

Some one please correct me and maybe we can put together an accurate time line here (I apologize if this has been done somewhere already) but I think that the TRB's :

-were introduced in the late 80's, as mine is an '89.
-started as the TRB-P4, P5, and P6 models, had about a 34" scale, neck through construction and piezo pickups in the bridge.
-made in Japan.

-I get confused after this because I think I've seen the 'II' series (for example, the TRB-5II) with both neck through and bolt on neck construction and am not sure when they stopped making the TRB's in Japan... ???

The TRB XPII existed in both bolt on and NT versions, the BO didnt have the piezos, at this point the pickups were the actual yamaha soapbars. Then the BO series production was moved to korea and renamed TRB 100X, the NTs were still made in Japan.

The preamps timeline is something im not sure about.

Here's the current TRB line-up.

It suggests which basses replaced previous models. the yamaha archive web page doesn't seem to be up to date for basses however.

I'm still thinking the first trb's were introduced in the late 80's and the model number was:
TRBP4, P5, and P6. They were 34" scale, neck through, piezzo bridges, and made in Japan.

With the help of a Blue Book Guitar guide the following was learned:
The TRBP4 was made between roughly 1989-1994.
The TRBP5 was made between roughly 1989-1996.
The TRBP6 was made between roughly 1989-1996.

Next came the TRB4, TRB5, and TRB6 manufactured with bolt on necks between 1994-1998.

Next came the TRB4II, TRB5II and TRB6II manufactured between 1998- ?

The TRB JP six string began as a bolt on neck with a 34" scale in 1994.

Hi

So i'm testing it.
I've done some research, from the serial number it's probably from 2008, quite recent, i was expecting a much older instrument..., 35" scale (yes), double truss rod, translucent Blue...
I'm very impressed, the instrument is very even on all scale, did't notice any dead spots yet, and i found it quite balanced.
The strings are completely beaten but i really liked the pickups, i'm not sure about the electronics.
This will probably be my first 6 string bass...

I've found some contradictory information regarding the pickups, are they active or not?
If i keep this, i'll probably change the electronics for something with a passive switch, passive tone and selectable mid freq., probably a John East U-Retro 5 Knob Deluxe, so i hope PUs are passive, so i can add another color to the pallet...

I just picked up a TRB-5p (neck through, original model) in an interesting green and added it to my collection. Love those basses!

Interesting reading about wich years the models were built!

Personally I have bought the bass of my dreams. :D

A Yamaha TRB JP2 TDR wich I bought from "rbolanos". =) Great guy, and I LOVE the JP2"

Here's a short clip of me trying it out! :)
