here's my claim to membership.

I should say too. While it's nice instrument. What I really wanted was one of the original TRB-5s, neckthrough and the like. So in many ways I've never been quite happy with this bass. I've toyed with epoxying the fingerboard and changing the pickups, but cash and time kinda stopped me. I've been playing it again over the last few days (my usual P-Bass is strung funny at the mo) and it really is a nice bass I guess. Lots of sustain except up near the 24th fret (which is normal). There's only one dead note on it. C on the d and g strings. I guess I just need to get over myself again. Afterall, I can play faster on it than anything else I've ever owned.

unfortunately, with that bridge (one per string basically) you can't do much, plus the other issue is the neck at the 24th fret is 3-5/8" I believe the Jp2 and TRB6,TRBJP are closer to 4"? I can't quite remember.

I will keep it in mind, you just never know...its taking such a long time to find this one, and I always thought the new II versions were all 19mm? so its a bit dissapointing, but extremely rewarding at the same time.

I don't know if this is the right place to put this up, but I have a short video of the (TRB6PII) last gig we did in T.O. with a salsa band, sorry no slapping on this tune, but you get the idea of the tone.
I like it, because when I change up to the EUB, it doens't feel like I lost all the bottom end.

here's a couple pics of my '89 TRB-5P. it's quickly become one of my favorite players. i'm a real fan of the P/J pickup configurations. i've replaced the tuners with hipshot ultralites and stripped and slightly reshaped the back of the neck. the neck now sports a light coat of satin poly. plays perfectly...

Just got this bass last weekend.:hyper:. It has a huge sound especially after dialing up the piezo. I just can't understand why Yamaha discontinue this model.

It's gonna be a keeper once i get used to its weight @10.3 lbs. Don't misunderstand me, it's not that heavy and it balances perfectly when worn. It's just that I have been spoilt by my Lakland 55-94 and MTD 535 weighing @ 9 pounds :D

congrats... i'm guessing that a lot of people see 'yamaha' and blow these 'trb' basses off. imho they are killer basses and buying one used can get you an amazing bass at a very reasonable price... i especially love the neck through models with the piezos...

Congrats on that bass, I just got the 6 string version of it. and its a killer bass. btw the model of your bass its a
TRB5PII and its not discontinued!:cool:

It isn't? I was surfing and reading up on this bass, trying to find out the retail price and its review, before i pulled the trigger. Musician's Friend states that TRB5PII's discontinued and i thought that was that.:rollno:

Hello again, I just got off the phone with the Yamaha folks, and its confirmed that the 5PII and 6PII are not discontinued as of yet. They are planning to revamp the complete TRB line in the next year or so, working on progress as we speak.
the TRB1000 line will upgraded and will start manufacturing them in Japan. again the new models will be ready in about a year or so.
They still sell and order the 5PII or 6PII from yamaha.
I hope that helps and curious with what they can come up, as I find the new line II pretty expensive.

is your bass the model that has the piezo's in the bridge? if not, it should work fine. as far as the tuners go, i know that the hipshot ultralite tuners i put on mine were a perfect fit/replacement.

I will be picking up a 1990s TRB5 next week, and I am extremely excited! I have said on many occassions that the TRB6 I owned around 1994 was as nice as any bass I ever had, including my Alembics or Ken Smith. I can't afford one of those US boutiques, so snagging an old Japanese TRB is a great alternative.:bassist:
