If your bass is a 94 the bridge is brass, just remove it and use brass polish and it will look good as new.
Hi fellow TRBers!! I have a few questions - pls help me as they have been bugging me for ages...
1)Can anyone out there with a TRBJP1 tell me where the serial number is? Can't see it at the back of the headstock, and it is not in the electronics compartment either.
2) When did Yamaha discontinue the TRBJP1 and start the new TRBJP2 (i.e. how long did the production run for JP1 go for, and how do I find out the year of production for my JP1)
3) My JP1 has a bluey hue, vs the redder/blackish one that was first released. It also has a flamed maple rather than quilted maple top - does anyone know roughly what years did Yamaha change the top?
4) What on earth does TRB stand for??

check this clip out from the Electrick band. John Patitucci started using a TRB6P before he came up with his own signature bass (TRBJP).

Hello TRB owners,I have some questions about the Yamaha TRB5P...how would you describe the tone of the aforementioned bass?I'm looking for a modern,hi-fi sounding bass,do you think a TRB5P could achieve that?

DO you want the newer model or the older, P/J version? Both sound good, but watch the piezo. The extra treble be very grating. Here is the newer version being played well:
huh???? I always wondered if the TRB line existed before JP, I guess because I always thought that the P on TRB6P meant Patitucci.... I actually always thought that even the earlier model was a signature model...

They were around before JP, and the P in TRB6P stands for "piezo". Any of the xP models have a piezo bridge.
I found the serial on my TRBJP. In the electronics compartment in between two of the screw holes that holds the cover on. It's written in black. Mine says 012028. I feel kinda silly not seeing it before.
I got my TRB5 today. The serial number makes me think it was made in 1997. The quality is evident. I am tickled to death to get such a nice bass as a great price. I will post new pics this evening the pic you see here was made by the former owner.
About the older P-models
The pickups on the six-string model is different from the 5-string
Why is that and shouldn´t this make the two models sound differently?
My first TRB was a 5p wich I bought without testing first. I was confident that I would find what I was looking for because I liked the sound Patitucci had when he played the 6P in one of the older clips on youtube. But I was actually dissapointed. It didn´t sound like the 6P he played at all. Is this because of the pickups?
Later on I sold it and bought the trb6 wich I liked alot more. Resently I bought the JP2 wich in my opinnion is the best! (of the TRB´s I have playes)

I took my 1997 TRB5 to the STL GTG and I came back very happy with my bass. Tonally, my TRB5 very much fit in the same tonal spectrum as dual soapbar basses like MTDs and Jerzy Drozd. I actually prefered my TRB's tone to that of the Skjold at the GTG. I think my electronics compared favorably too. I know the owner of a really nice MTD 635 commented on how powerful the preamp on my TRB5 is. One noticeable difference is that string spacing on my TRB5 seemed just a touch closer than that on the MTD5. I Think the either the MTD is a touch wider thatn 19mm or the TRB is a touch under 19mm. I will have to measure and find out.
In terms of fit and finish, my TRB is a step down from true boutiques. The beauty of the finish of a Sadowsky or MTD is just better than the finish on my TRB. I would rank the finish on my TRB5 as probably equal to that of a MIA Fender Jazz Deluxe V or maybe a Stingray V. All in all, I think this bass would have easily been $1,100-$1,500 when new, and was steal at $500 used.

Had this for a couple years, finally got a chance to play with a real band and tried all of my close to 20 basses before I took this one. Perfect ballance, nice neck and can get the sound I was looking for.
I believe it was one of the first built in 1994 from what I could find of the serial number. Just a really nice bass.
