That is absolutely beautiful. How does the fretless sound with the piezos? I've been wanting one like that since i got my 6P.

Thank you for your compliment. Describing sound is difficult and subjective, but I have heard the term “piano-like clarity” used before. I always thought that that term succinctly represented the sound of this bass prior to the conversion, and it applies now. The piezos in combination with the other PUs renders a very broad sound pallet. I am very pleased with it!
I have a Marcus Miller IV with a John East pre-amp. With that setup the options are almost endless. I contacted John East about a year and a half ago about changing the pre-amp in the TRB-5P. He came up with an idea that incorporated the piezos. Due to the exchange rate at that time the cost was over four hundred dollars. I plan to revisit that idea in the near future. By the way, he is very pleasant to work with.

This is probably the better thread to be posting it on anyway. So forgive the [essentially] double post, and please see my direct quote below (pertaining to a 1999 MIJ Yamaha TRB 5IIF). Thanks

The "soapbar" casing prevents me from seeing the number of magnets, which would answer my question, and just the fact that the spec-sheet says "double coil" doesn't tell me anything, because both a "humbucker" as well as a "phantom coil" pickup would technically classify as a "double coil" pickup. Well, just got a reply from Yamaha support on my "humbucker" vs. "Phantom coil" question! As I suspected, they are Phantom coils! See the response below:

I would think that TRB 5PIIF would be the right model number as my fretless is the TRB 5IIF, just the ordinary model# with the F added to the end to denote fretless. So I think you're right. Anybody know for sure?

Jay - do you really have a F in your model number on the back of your head...??

Asking because I just bougth a TRB-5II Fretless - but there is no F ... but it is fretless. I suspect it is a fretted bass that have been converted to fretless - as it does have fretlines

Does anybody know how to decode the Serial-no.??.. it is: 8FP2117 .... When is it made ?

For your general information, I found out that in the last year TRB5s were made, they had a MSRP of $1,699. TRB6s were $1,999. Adjusted for 2009 dollars, TRB5s would be $2,225.40. A TRB6 would be $2,618.58. Assuming a 30% discount, if the old TRB5's street price would be about $1,557.78 if they were still being made. TRB6s would be $1,833. That means that they would certainly be on par with MIA Fender Jazz Deluxes, Music Man, Skyline or G&L when it comes to price.

Getting these used for under $600 is as good a deal as I know of!

My $425 bid was usurped by a $512 bid in the last 2 seconds + $70 shipping... I'd say someone got a killer deal on this one... unfortunately for me

Pardon me if this has been discussed, but has the TRB1000 series been discontinued? Can't seem to find them for sale online (listed as discontinued/unavailable), but Yamaha's site doesn't indicate any signs of discontinuance.

Edit: Read through the thread and found my answer. Can't wait to see what they do to the new TRB line when they revamp them. Saw some live videos of Tony Grey sporting a custom made TRB-6PII and it made my GAS levels shoot up.

I just got my first 6 string, this beauty TRB 1006.
Love playing it, but had to learn movable anchor to play the beast.
So I made a little ramp, and omg, it feel amazing. Only took a week or so to get the movable anchor going, and wow, feels great!
Gotta love Yammies!
