I have a Yamaha TRBX604FM, and it's amazing. I traded in my 605FM for it as my metal project I was using the low B for was no more, but honestly I should have kept the 5 string. Either way, my Yamaha bass is probably my favorite I've played in my 18 years of bass playing.
Believe it or not, I still have my original 90s TRB manual (covers the 4, 5, and 6). The 6 radius is listed at 1000 mm...which seems really large, but the 5 and 4 are 600 and 250 respectively, so I guess it's right.
While were at it, here are all the other stats:
Neck: maple & mahogany
Body: quilted maple
Fingerboard: ebony
Nut: Bone, 2 3/16" (56 mm)
Scale: 33 7/8" (860 mm)

Highly subjective like you said, but I've always gone back to D'Addario EXL170s after trying many others. It's just "the" sound for me and that bass. It probably also helps that's what Patitucci played for a while. That said I don't think I've got those strings on any others basses at the moment.
I'm using GHS Pressurewounds. I think they are a good match for me on this instrument. They are only available in 5-string sets, but the high C is available as a single to make a 28-128 set.

I just ordered a used Trbjp2 from Guitar center only to find out somebody had replaced the stock pick ups with Bartolini’s. It sounded fine and worked well but part of the reason you get this bass is the way it was tuned. Paritucci Played a role in the EQ of the preamp to get that sound. I ended up returning it and getting a new one from Sweetwater. It’s a 2019 and has the same feel as the used one but the sound is amazing. Not that the barts were bad, they are great pickups and I love them on my other bass. I wanted the stock sound of this instrument. On the new instrument I can get a classic kind of fender sound but also a very ballsy solo sound very quick. I’m finding the output is very hot so I keep the volume 3/4 max and crank a little for soloing. My jazz group can’t get over the sound. Still getting use to the Spacing and strings.

I was so happy with my recent TRB5II purchase that I pulled the trigger on a TRB 1005. Again I swapped out the control knobs as I'm not fond of the plastic ones. Much lighter weight. Same playability. Tone is brighter on this one while the 5II is warmer. Both excellent in their own ways. Very high quality instrument for a MIK!

Quintessence what bridge is that on the TRB 5II? Was it a direct drop in replacement?
The bridge is a Schaller 2000. But I don’t know if it was a drop in replacement - the previous owner put it in.
Thanks, Barcza! This is the TRB-6P - the six-string with the piezo pickups and neck-through construction, made from the late 80s till the mid 90s. John Patitucci played this model before designing his own signature.
Yamaha’s naming system is frustratingly confusing, but this is not the TRB JP2 (the Patitucci model), or a TRB-6.

That’s the first version of the 6p, with 34’ scale....that’s a killer bass, and I think is look better than the Patitucci model...
John's first 6 string Yamaha bass was a TRB6P Custom (or "deluxe" model) made mainly for the Japanese market and basically it was the same (trb6p) neckthrough body bass with the same piezo bridge/pickups/preamp and body/neck wood combo but had a solid flamed maple top and slightly different body contour on the front side of the body. By the way, I had a blue/green TRB6P back in the 90's and that was one of the best 6 string basses I've ever played. Later in '94 Yamaha introduced his first signature bass TRB6JP (the 24 fret fb version with the 2 position mid switch preamp, bolt on, 34" scale and no piezo saddles in the bridge) and in the early 2000s they discontinued that model and introducesd his second signature bass, the TRBJP2, that was pretty similar to the previous model except the 35" scale, 26 frets and 3 band ("upgraded") preamp. That said, I am pretty happy with my "standard" japanese TRB6II and my TRB5IIF. Here they are:
Technically, I believe it's actually the second version of the TRB-6p. The first one only had one truss rod instead of two. Fantastic basses regardless, I've had mine since 1992.

Depends on which way you look at it. Perhaps the two different truss rod set ups are part of the first version, so it would be v1.1 and v1.2. So maybe it's a "version" vs. "generation" sort of thing.

Does anyone know how much these TRBs cost new? I'm particularly interested in knowing if anyone knows what the new price for the TRB-5II and TRB-6P were (preferably before clear-out prices).
