Double Bass Yamahiko Double Bass Pickup

Thanks, Tyler. Well almost back. Apparently I can't post in the threads relating to my stuff. Go figure.
I have one element. I'll probably pop for the second one but if you read my comments on the Underwood, the second element doesn't simply add more--it can also subtract due to phase issues. I'll try it with the Doubler and the IVP---both have electronically isolated channels.
Now seems like a great time to buy a Yamahiko what with the Dollar so strong...You can save some money. I personally really like 2 element pickups. The phase thing is, I think, over criticized. I am running an Underwood and a Remic mic now (just played a really loud bar with it and was amazed at how much Remic I could blend in and how great that sound is) All this to say, I am seriously considering the Yamahiko 2 element( I have been for years...I have a friend in Japan who says that many players there use them) and I would probably buy not only 2 elements but an extra jack just to be able to run the two sides separately if I wanted....The truth is the Speaker Cab makes such a huge difference. Im just going to plug the MAS speakers here once more since Mike cant. But I find that so many pickups are viable now with this speaker cab (and a nice preamp) FC, Underwood, Schertler, Aptflex, EAP, etc all sound so much better with a more useful sound pallet then with other Cabs. Just my opinion.
Would love to hear a sound clip....but of the Yamahiko THRU something SONIC Farmy and a MAS cab. mic that and lets listen to the clip and I'll bet it sounds damn good....Throw the Remic in there for some serious acoustic punch.

I always thought that the phasing of two element pickups almost disappears if both pickups get their own amp and speaker. That way the phasing does not occur in a 1-dimensional medium like in a cable but acoustically in a 3-dimensional room. But I never tried that myself.
ok---really digging the Yamahiko. In a purely romantic sense I like the Fishman a bit better---at least with little eq. I have to cut mids on the Yamahiko a bit. But the envelope and function of the Yamahiko are definitely better. With the Fishman the E string sounds full but a bit "synthesized" to me. Not enough rhythmic drive. The rhythmic drive is better all around with the Y. Root fifth double stops are clearer and less muddy . I can even play said double stops on the E and A string and they are clear and defined. The G string is a bit thicker with the Fishman. With a simple parametric I can thicken up the G with the Y though. The band members all comment on how it's more powerful. I'm going to pop for the second element. Might just screw everything up but I'll give it a try. I'm going to get the interconnecting cable and the cable-to-jack. This way I can see if it works ok going from one to the other as they show on the website, but I can also try to tun them separately into the Doubler or my IVP which has two buffered inputs. Digging my Doubler a lot more since I swapped out the existing power module for the one with twice the power.(fits in there just fine) Just don't tell anyone!
Having just done a gig with a Wizzy 10 after about a year of only using the MAS 46, Im just saying that with these new MAS speakers (who makes those damn things anyway?) A LOT of pickups sound better, usable, sweeter. I'll bet that Yamahiko (if it is super mid present) would sound pretty bad on first blush with a lot of other gear.
Interestingly enough, the Yamahiko was likely the prototype for the Fishman Full Circle. Since it wasn't patented in the U.S. ( lawyers are funny that way) Fishman could develope the Full Circle, without technically infringeing on the
Yamahiko. Of course, it's a "letter of the law" vs the "spirit of the law' issue, but there have been several time when designs were modified, and released by a different company. Don Underwood, evidently had a very good patten on
his pickup because, the language of the Underwood patten, apparently prevented both Fishman and Upton, from using the dual bridge wing design. Yamahiko was not as fortunate.

Forums are there to collect information that is available for all for a long time to look for the right info. Only if you cannot find the needed information after a longer (!) search, ask here.
The Yamahiko is the original bridge adjuster pickup from japan. There are recordings available. Eddie Gomez uses them.

Just watched the Eddie Gomez dvd of 2005 he did at David gauge..
He said he uses a combo of the realist with the "Japanese pickup".. Together apparently.
He did not refer to it as the yamahiko.. Funny I guess he didn't want to mention it in front of David Gauge at his shop ha..

just popped for Yamahiko #2. I got the cable to hook the two together and the cable to run directly into an amp. I have a couple of amps with 2 buffered input channels. I'm really digging the one that I have mounted. Especially since I switched string brands for the first time in over 40 years. Really digging the Zyex!

My Golia bass with one yamahiko. Hot rodded EA Doubler (900 watts) through on of my 26's No ,mic on the bass, no direct. Just one mic 3 feet from the cab. BTW---I go for a really dark sound!

Nice! I think that's a very usable sound. I hear a little piezo quack on the g string but can't help but wonder if that might open up further out in the room. The playing is great as usual, and I really dig the piano player!
