Double Bass Yamahiko

Dear gawd, I've used compression on my acoustic bass live, it sorta works I guess. But OTH it just another in an ongoing series of compromises when amplifying. I think it all started when Ron Carter and Rudy Van Gelder came up with the "glow in the dark sound" on those CTI recordings. Kinda dig that as an effect, but the compression never sounds like that live ime. In a controlled environment it can be ok, but in a live situation it's a crap shoot.

Anyone ever get one of these? I've been playing with the Underwood (through the MAS 46) and sometimes taking one element out and other times leaving it in. I think that the phasing thing people are talking about is how with one element the sound is big and fat and how with two it is midrangy and direct. I am really curious about the Yamahiko 2 pickup version...I find myself playing more and more with a mic to FOH and a pickup to hear by, and I want to hear clear and fast. I kind of like the sound of a 2 element pickup (quick clear mid-y with a super thumb position) mixed with a mic (for the air).
I would try the 2 pickup version and maybe get a separate jack for it too so I could try all the possibilities (2 into one jack, separate channels, one pickup etc.) and then if I liked only one I could sell the other as a whole pickup.

Mike, I have some of the Patricia Barber recordings, and I really admire your playing, and your tone. I think you should try out a troll mic. I've tried everything there is, including the eap and the full circle that was brought up in this thread. The. Troll sounds so much better than any other pickup or mic I've tried. If you like the sound of miked bass in the studio, I think you'll dig the troll.
