Do you really need 40 tunes as an opener? Can the band narrow it down to exactly what they'll play?

It takes mega balls to jump on the deep end after just learning to swim. Sometime 95% of success is just showing up. If the bandleader knows and understands and your limitations and is willing to work with you, I say go for. OJT.

I actually found myself in a similar situation, once upon a time. 20 years old, just switched to bass from guitar. My guitar teacher asked if I could fill in for a cover band bar gig on a Friday and Saturday at a popular local spot. We had one full band rehearsal, and he worked with me every other day. We ended up cutting the set down to about 30 songs, and he found a more seasoned fill-in bassist for the Saturday show. I was in over my head, played off cheat sheets, and made a few mistakes but nothing disastrous. The guitarist was very good, and the drummer was a local icon, so they helped elevate my playing and cover my mistakes.

My favorite moment of the night was during Surfing with the Alien. I fell off the beat and couldn’t find when/where to jump back in. The guitarist walked over to me and started tapping the notes on my bass with his picking hand while playing his part with just his fretting hand (hammer ons and pull offs). I felt like screw up until I walked out to see some friends at the end of the set and they told me they thought it was part of the show.

Lesson learned. Experience gained.

Without other compelling information, no.

if the set list was mostly songs i have listened to many times so i knew where the breaks and changes were, i might say yes. i could fake it even if the bass lines weren't from the records. if i wasn't familiar with the songs, i'd say no.

and as socialleper says, sounds like they have some pretty unrealistic expectations.

btw, 40 songs is more than a 2 hour set. i'm not seeing it as an opening act.
