In my case, it's because other people cant take care of them, and someone has to. I'd much rather there were none in captivity..but they're here.
Totally correct. Some days I walk into the rescue and the sight of the cages makes me want to shoot myself. However, they cant be released, so once they're imported or bred in captivity, they need care...even though by definition it's inadequate.
Can’t be released? Tell that to the flocks off them roaming The Bay Area! Many are escaped from cages then breed in the wild. I have no idea how many die each year from the weather not being optimal but there’s a lot of them there, from Northbay all the way down to the Southbay.
There are feral flocks in a lot of areas, including some in cold climates...monk parrots in Chicago, for example. But the attrition is way high, and the longer a bird has been captive, the lower its chance of survival. Many of the birds I care for cant even fly. Over the past 22 years I've cared for about 1100 parrots, and I wouldnt give a nickel for any individual's chances in the wild.
However, if you can convince me that they all can live, I'll happily set them free. I wont kill them out of idealism, though. I'd rather care for them in captivity than kill them by turning them out.

I play flute and sax. I lived in New Zealand for a while and a girlfriend had a parrot. They are very smart and interesting. They are almost like having a two or three year old human child around in terms of how smart they are and how much they understand and how much attention they want. You can take a Parrot out for a walk and they seem to understand when you talk to them better than any dog or cat does.
I used to play my sax for her parrot and he would dance around and strike hilarious poses and it was great fun. If I lived anywhere near that CL ad, I'd go over once or twice for an hour or two and play music and hang out with a parrot just for the hell of it.
OK ... sorry to derail ... back to what an idiot the CL parrot guy must be. I do love the bagpipes for a squirrel posts though - brilliant!

A friend of mine works in parrot rescue in Australia. Yes, some of them are best kept in cages because they're just not going to survive in the wild, though the aim is to rehabilitate and release as many as possible - and yes, they absolutely do get as much time out of the cage as she can manage for each of them.
But it sounds to me like this person needs to admit they're not properly caring for the animal and find it a good home, assuming it's not fit for release.

One of my friends runs a parrot sanctuary. I enjoy letting parrots perch on my shoulder but they poop on you and chew on your hair and glasses.
