You don't own your phone...

Your phone owns you; but that shouldn't be too much of a surprise if you've been paying attention. Ever escalating, the robocall wars will never be over. Like the old joke goes, if you're talking to yourself, no problem, just don't answer yourself. Me getting a call from me has already happened...

Mine sits in a basket as soon as I get home or end a call and it is not looked at again until it makes a noise.
Yesterday it was glanced at once around 3:00pm and never again. Currently 10:00am the next day and still ain't been looked at it.

It is a Costco free phone that is around seven years old,
I own this keyboard sliding out son of a call box.

I was out one night not long ago, and recieved a call from my own number :wideyed: didn't answer it... I'm trying to avoid that guy  Still very curious who was on the other end.

"Hello me, meet the real me..."

But seriously, I heard spoofers can now make it look like they're calling from within your area code, but using an exact number is new news to me.

I don't even answer a call anymore that's not in my contact list.
Yep, and I go one better. I block the contact, then delete the number. That way I can pretend it didn't happen. I haven't yet heard from anyone who said I missed their call. The only way they can fool me is if they leave voice mail. I'll always check that. ...but most of them don't.

I make it a point to answer all of those calls, and, I keep them on the line as long as possible. Even when it's a recording I will hit the appropriate number to get the chance to speak to a person. I can waste their time as well, and I do because it makes them mad.

It used to bother me, then I started bothering back.

Every time it rains, I get calls about my roof and whether or not it needs repair- Nevermind that I do not own a house and am usually not the person they were calling for in the first place.

At first I would just hang up.

Then I later started sweetly telling them to die in a fire before hanging up.

Finally, I just started talking to them.

Not about my roof, mind you. I talk about other things. I tell them how my day is going, my hopes, my fears, and any dirty little thought that courses through my head at the time. I ask about their families, their dreams, and make guesses about their physical appearance and whether or not I'd be interested in them. I tell them stories, tell them jokes, burst into song if the mood strikes me- all until they get frustrated, and then I drop the pretense and I tell them what's up.

I tell them that since they so kindly offered to bother me as they did, I took something from them. I claimed minutes of their lives for my own- precious minutes they will never get back, minutes that could have been spent with their children, their wives and husbands, their parents, their friends, all stolen from their lives forever, and every fleeting instant they ever wish to themselves they could have had just a bit more time with someone they loved, I'll be there in the back of their minds, having consumed that dear sweet moment as their penance for interrupting my day.

Then I hang up.

By the end of it, I actually feel a lot happier that they called. It's amazing stress relief.
Don't find the wind, guys- just sail with it. :p
