i share your affection for Jaco, but a rant like this won't generate good vibes towards his memory - it will just get people wondering about your psychological state and why you are so angry others don't share your opinions...

As others have mentioned lets not forget John Entwistle. Pete Townshend can be seen saying "he changed the way people play the F'ing instrument".

But I also agree with other there there are many other people as important as Jaco. But in agreement with the original thread he was awesome and people should at least go buy his first album and read his biography.

IMHO lots of younger cats don't know about Jaco because this is a different time and there is someone named Victor Wooten out there that appears to have all the chops Jaco had plus some, has a style they want to learn (double thump) and rips it up in any musical situation he plays in! I think Victor is a circus act albeit a very good one!!! Victor also appears to be squeaky clean in his performance and private life. Again JMHO.

Hi! Young bassists.
Jaco Pastorius was undoubtedly a well known and capable bassist and I was working long before I had heard of him. No-one has mentioned Jim Fielder who played bass with Blood, Sweat & Tears and was a thinking bassists bassist.
People get irrational when they attempt to get into musicians' minds and that includes non-playing listeners and amateurs alike. There are many unknown bassists around the world and I accept what they do at the level they do it as par for the course.

And I'd add, I not only am in NO WAY influenced by Jaco, I really can't stand his playing.
I think the OP is what my wife refers to as a "troll" in forum-speak.

I guess you have a point. But the OP MIGHT not be a troll. He may just be......."odd". And, again, his post started an interesting conversation. Heck, even HE may have learned something. It just seems to me that people get TOO offended TOO easily these days. But I'm not here to change things. I guess the rules are there for a reason. I just wish the line could be pushed back a little.

And to Jordasch, I apologize if I offended you.

Jim Fielder is a great example of player who made a major impact before Jaco and Stanley who clearly had chops at their level. Obviously, James Jamerson and Chuck Rainey had those chops too. I guess my point is Jaco didn't invent mad chops, he just helped make it cool to display them prominently.

I guess I'll have to remove a string, rip out my frets, and (over)play endless streams of 16th notes that really don't work in anything other than Jaco or Tower Of Power tunes before I can find work as a musician.

My band wants to cover "Brown Eyed Girl?" I'd better play it like "Teen Town;" otherwise they'll think I'm a just a hack who doesn't worship Jaco!
