I'm ashamed- I never even knew Michael Jackson played bass, I thought Jermaine did that.
I was recently blown away by the # of ill informed posts concerning my friend and THE biggest innovator of the electric bass, Jaco Pastorius.
Go buy Bill Millkowski's biography about Jaco and read it. Jaco died because of a mental illness.
Jaco had absolutely no influence on my playing. All my bass playing influences were either before his time or were not influenced by him either. I don't enjoy his bass playing, nor do I enjoy his music. I'm into other stuff. So what? I don't like avocados, wine, beagles, or babies either. Diverse styles, tastes, interests, influences etc. are what make humans not mind-numbingly boring. If we all had the same pastimes, desires, inspirations, etc., life would be way too dull and sad.
IMHO lots of younger cats don't know about Jaco because this is a different time and there is someone named Victor Wooten out there that appears to have all the chops Jaco had plus some, has a style they want to learn (double thump) and rips it up in any musical situation he plays in! I think Victor is a circus act albeit a very good one!!! Victor also appears to be squeaky clean in his performance and private life. Again JMHO.
Considering the fact that this thread was only started 8 hours ago, there's a good chance that the two Bassists mods haven't seen it yet. The Mods WANT you to report the trolls. They have said so countless times over the seven years I've been here. And there are a lot of rules laid out that specifically say that many types of posts are uncalled for and not allowed, particularly ones that are disrespectful (which yours falls under with the "cryin to mama" and "grow up" parts when all Jordasch did was do what he was SUPPOSED to do).
No, Jaco died because of a massive brain hemorrhage, from having been severely beaten. Technically correct.
Hi! Young bassists.
Jaco Pastorius was undoubtedly a well known and capable bassist and I was working long before I had heard of him. No-one has mentioned Jim Fielder who played bass with Blood, Sweat & Tears and was a thinking bassists bassist.
People get irrational when they attempt to get into musicians' minds and that includes non-playing listeners and amateurs alike. There are many unknown bassists around the world and I accept what they do at the level they do it as par for the course.
...Jaco didn't invent mad chops, he just helped make it cool to display them prominently.
He must have gotten his information from wikipedia![]()
If you play the electric bass and don't have Jaco as a major influence, you will NEVER work as a musician.
