After 40 years of playing in bands, I've seen too much, too often and still haven't learned.

I knew that I should have quit a metal cover band that I spent the last 3 months with, when I learned on the 2nd rehearsal that the former bass played was stabbed by the current guitarist.

Turns out: 1. Metal can become as boring as Classic Rock, just louder; 2. the guitarist is a "mean drunk", now peacefully sedated with legal weed (CA perk); he stabbed the guy with a plastic cake knife and let the public defender plea bargain for him.

You know you should quit the band when...your story here.

...You ask the singer for his lyrics, because you're going to sing backup, and he says "Meh, I never really wrote them down, I make them up on the spot and sing something different everytime". This after having performed with this guy multiple times.

I get your point, but man I'd like to be able to do that. I speak french and english both fairly well, but I don't seem to master any of them (either that or I'm a really bad poet). Writing a single song is a lot of effort, let alone improvising it on the spot...
It all depends on the quality of the lyrics of course

Back on topic, I quit a band when their old bassist came back and they had me play rhythm guitar instead of bass :D That guy was really good and I was just learning, but still, I would have rather wanted to hear "we don't need you anymore"

...the rhythm guitarist reaches over and turns your amp down.

My response in that situation of course, "well if you don't want to hear the bass, you don't need a bass player!" and promply left.

Sorry, no plastic cake knifes were handy.;)

I punched our guitarist for doing that.I swear, wired his jaw shut.If you are a bandmate of mine?Don't believe me?Try me.I have NO PROBLEM obliging you.Ask,keep your di**beaters off my volume knob!

My saying????Do unto others...........

when you say to the guitarist play me a D# and he says what fret is that... great guitarist but working with him is pain becuase he has no theory knowlege, and also them expecting you to know the song that him and the other guitarist wrote the night before without showing it to me....
