two types of velcro - the sticky on one side type and the type I use to keep my cables all together
A broken microphone (I used it twice to get out of singing backup!)
Guitar strings
An old set of bass strings
A sharpie and a whiteboard marker (TONS of uses for that white board marker! I wrote on my bass once...)
The set list from last show (often times last shows set becomes THIS shows set in a pinch)
Paper, because writing a set list on bar napkins got really old

battery powered string winder (which i've been trying to get rid of for like 6 months but can't just throw it away)

flat head and philips screwdrivers
8 AAA batteries different brands
picks
small needle nose pliers
skull charm
two electric tuners

I used to have a dozen ball point pens but no idea where those went.

Upon further examination, this is whats in my front pouch of my gigbag -

Bag of misc screws, bolts, strap buttons, and a neckplate.
Bag of picks. I really need to clean it out. Theres picks worn down to nubs in here.
String winder. Hey, thats where that is.
Tiny phillips head screw driver.
1 pair socks
1 bright green bandana.
1 flashlight that doesnt work.
assorted AA/AAA/D/9v batteries. Weird. I dont even have anything that takes AA or D.
Danelectro pedal tuner, held together with duct tape.
Lime Green duct tape.
Assorted chords of various lengths.
2 black sharpies, 1 silver, 1 lime green
Old setlists. REALLY old setlists.

I really need to clean this out now.

I'm a bit surprised that more of you don't carry "security" along with the other essentials. The stuff that's immediately available to me is cold Pepsi, sweat rag, string/neck wipe dish towel, loaded .32. As to the loaded gun, from way back, I learned better safe than sorry. :cool:

Small LED flashlight - small enough to hold between your teeth so both hands are free.
5 D-cell maglight - Bigger & brighter when looking for stuff (the guitarist's keys!) out in the dark parking lot after the gig. Also doubles as a security item. Hurts like hell to get hit with it.

My "security" is only a .22 mini revolver, but it rides in my right front pocket whenever I'm wearing pants-not in my gig bag.

can't carry a gun at least not until I'm able to go to court and get my juvi record sealed. But in all honesty guns can cause a lot of problems when used on another person, even in self defense (remember the subway vigilante?). Security though is a simple matter if you think about it. Anything that can be picked up can be used as a weapon. If you're in a bar weapons are all around you (ashtrays, beer bottles, pool sticks, pool balls) even your bass can make a great weapon. Your equipment is replaceable/fixable.

The only thing I take because I found a need to HAVE one is an outlet tester. I nearly fried my old Eden rig one night on a bad outlet. They are about $3 and can save your rig. I plug it into every outlet I get ready to plug in to. It looks like this:

my truss rod tool (my Warrior has a spoke wheel, so nearly anything will work, but I take it anyway)
