From last Monday's Faculty Chamber Jazz series at the U, where we invite members of the classical faculty to play with the jazz faculty, and we write music to play with them. This is the most unapologetically romantic thing I have ever written in my life, and guest Geoff Herd just kills it on the violin. So glad to have such wonderful colleagues!
My band started a short tour last week at Chris’s Jazz Cafe in Philly. I was a little bleary from the drive (we’re from Detroit) but it was great to be in there. Coincidentally our friend Jeff Pedraz, a truly great bassist and Philly native was in town visiting his mother. He put us up for the night and showed us the some of the sights, including after gig cheesesteaks. Good times!
This was a ripping free jazz set with concise pieces. I have been using my old GK again for this sort of thing. This trio will play at St. Louis University 12/14 & Reverberation Vinyl in Bloomington, Il 12/16

Thanks Chris! We did ok in Philly considering it was a Tuesday night. We hit Pittsburgh (Bantha Tea Bar), had a great night in Columbus at the Ginger Rabbit, and then wrapped it up with a couple great nights in Cincinnati (almost your neck of the woods). I got to hang with some old friends there all in all it was a success.
I’m working up my one-man-band solo schtick using a loop pedal to let me take a chorus or two of sax solo, in the early stages. Any advice/guidence/suggestions are welcome and appreciated.
Take the saxophone solo without the loop. Space is nothing to be afraid of in solo playing. What you can actually do in real time is actual solo playing and always will be more impressive than looping.
Liking it and being dependent on it are two different things. A looping solo and true solo concert are also two different things. Looping solo sets are basically artificial duos and you never really get to find out what you can actually do on your own. Learning how to imply the other elements is more a valuable skill.
