Rod Ellicott! What a great pick player! I never played with a pick, but I spend hours listening to his playing with Cold Blood back in the day!

Tom Scholz (he DID play bass on all those Boston albums and did it pretty damn well)
These guys are in my head when I play. There are dozens more that I admire, but I was listening to these guys when I started my bass journey.

Trying to limit it to those players whose styles/approaches to the instrument most seep into my own playing and writing...
1) Paul McCartney - Simple, melodic, smooth, always supports the song
2) Mike Gordon (Phish) - Quirky, colorful, more complex, traverses so many styles
3) Toby Lehman (Dr. Dog) - My wildcard 3rd pick for now, very Macca-like to my ear in a modern rock context
