mines pretty easy.

started with a soundgear Ibanez of some sort almost 20 years ago. something like a srx390 maybe?

then ESP ltd B5E, man I wish id kept that bass now...

tried to return to 4's with a squire VM70s j bass that I modified and then a Yamaha trbx304

then I realized I really can't do 4 string basses and bought my American pro p5

then a couple years later the stingray special 5 and ive stopped there. tried others, bought a few and returned them. im spoiled by it.

I can only tell you my bass guitar (BG) history, but I have also played upright bass and electric upright bass extensively:

Prior to owning my own BG I borrowed a couple of instruments. One was essentially a toy and the other was a Rickenbacker 4001 that belonged to a friend's brother.

The order of my #1s.

1. Rickenbacker 4001 (this was/is my bass) Years as #1: early 80s to early 90s.
2. Yamaha BB5000 (this was a military bass) Years as #1: early to mid 90s.
3. Yamaha TRB6P (this was a military bass, but I bought my own) Years as #1: Since about 1995.

I started on viola in 5th grade. Switched to upright in about 8th grade. Started playing the toy bass guitar around 11th grade, and bought my Rick in approximately 12th grade.

I have never sold a personal instrument. BGs in my collection:
1. Yamaha TRB6P
2. Rickenbacker 4001
3. Tacoma ThunderChief
4. Fender Precision Elite II
5. Daion PowerMark XB
6. Washburn Bantam (headless)

Mine is nowhere near that long, I'm sitting at 7 currently owned, and I've only sold two in the past.

One was a Greg Bennett ABG which was my first taste of playing bass. Don't regret selling this at all.

The other I sold was a Godin Shifter 4.
I picked it up for an absolute bargain, loved just about everything about it but found after a while that the back of the neck would gum up a lot due to my very sweaty hands, to the point that I'd have to wipe it down between every song. Once I got a few other basses I decided to sell it (for nearly double what I paid). Every time I see a photo of it I regret selling it, but the reality is that if I did get it back I'd quickly remember why I sold it.

One of the most prescient things I ever did was, about 15 years ago I put together a Word document with a paragraph about each guitar, bass, amp and cabinet I had owned in my life, which at that time was still a manageable number, including (to the extent I could recall) where and when I got it, what I paid, when I sold it and how much for (if applicable), and any performance highlights. Ah, cool thread; let's see if I can remember.

My first was a No-Name Telecaster Bass Copy, Cream with a white guard and maple neck, in about 1974-5.
Fender Precision, all black wish a maple neck. My first really nice bass. 1977. I'd rather still have that than the first wife who made me sell it to cover her stupid bills...
PRS first gen 5-string, NEVER should have sold that, LOVED it, white with rosewood or some other dark wood board. I forget the year.
Westone Pantera, white with a dark board and black neck. (I got married, (again)...) had kids and was broke, all I could afford.) It wasn't bad for the price.
Rickenbacker 4003, Mapleglo. Sold to buy my kids Christmas gifts. No regrets, it was the right thing to do.
AS Fender Precision, gold with a maple neck.
AS Fender Jazz, a cool blue with a maple neck.
Rickenbacker 4003, Jetglo, played like a poorly sanded and warped 2 x 4, quickly sold.
Rickenbacker 4003, Jetglo, a better one, but I still only kept it a year or so.
AS Fender Precision, Tobacco Burst with a rosewood board. Sounded GREAT with GHS flats. Offered stupid money for it, sold it.
Franken-Fender Fretless Jazz Bass, still have it, kind of cool.
AS Fender Jazz fretless, black with a lined rosewood neck. Liked it but sold it anyway.
AS Fender Jazz, Sunburst with Maple neck. Never sounded just right to me, sold it.
AS Fender Jazz, all black with a maple neck, Got broke, sold it.
EB MusicMan 5-string H, Just never liked any sound it made. Sold it here I think.
Rickenbacker 4003, early 2000s, Fireglo, still have it, nicest playing Rick I have ever owned. I have every possible gadget, case candy item, tool, publication or manual Rickenbacker produced for it in the case still.
Fender American Elite PJ, black with a maple neck, still have it, still like it.
Fender American Elite Jazz, black with a maple neck, still have it, still really like it.
Yamaha, TRBX305-5-string, Natural spalted (fake) finish, got it for a song to play with my son's band from time to time, needed that big "B" string.
Squeir Buller Bronco Bass, red with a maple neck, that was abandoned at my house by someone, and I inherited it by default. Fun to fiddle around on from time to time.

If I forgot any its because I'm old, had a stroke, or just hated the bass enough that I put it out of my mind.
