It’s a mistake I personally don’t do.
When a bass sounds great, I keep it whatever the brand or model.
Many of my friends did those mistakes though, letting go some nice Squier basses as they became gear snobs and regrets came later on…………

My first bass was an '87 Squier Bullet. Still have it. It's freaking great.

I guess I wish I still had my first squire for nostalgia reasons?

Currently have 5 basses in my possession. Those 5 are not going anywhere. Including that first bass, I have owned a total of 9. Aside from the first, I do not miss the others. Ditched for a reason.

Bought and sold/traded a buttload of basses prior to 1990. Once a deal is done, what if and shoulda coulda woulda are moot points. Regret only makes you hesitate on the next one and hesitation is for yield signs, not bass purchases. But is a revolving door of basses a bad thing? I only ask because had I not been doing the bass shuffle I’d have never found my #1 back in 1990. Since then I’ve bought a few but only after retiring my #1. I’ve still got a few of the post retirement acquisitions but time and a handful of aw poopie moments have robbed me of the dexterity to play a long scale so I’m once again in the process of offing everything but a recently acquired Mustang P/J, and my old #1.

I think of every bass I've owned as part of a chain. Each bass led me to the next, and to the next, and to the next, etc. There are basses I owned in the past that I think back fondly on, but I would not exchange my current basses for any of them. They were right for the time and situation, but what I have now is right for this time and situation that I'm currently in. It would be fun to play some of my former basses again, but doing so would probably just remind me of why I let them go.

I haven’t bought many basses, like 2 since the mid 70’s, and one of those only because I needed a 5 string, the other was for my son to learn on. The most I’ve ever had at one time was three and the third one spend most of the 34 years I had it, it sat in the case.

I don’t miss any of the ones I’ve sold because when I’m done with them, I’m done with them for good.

I got a good story for ya
I was 16 workin my first job at a car wash,
One day I was working at the end of the car wash
We hand dried every car I think I was making 2.50 an hour.
Anyway , A guy came thru the carwash as we were drying his car , he rolled down his window I guess he asked me if I play " the electric guitar " cuz I had long hair , I said no I play bass guitar though , when we're done drying his car , he tells me to come over to the vacuums I wanna show ya somethin .
He opened his trunk to show me the
" electric guitar " he wants to sell..
He opens the case , it's not a guitar like he said, it's a Bass ,a FENDER Bass , I knew fender made bass guitars , I don't think I even knew what kind of fender it was . I knew about the telecaster cuz Tom Hamilton played one. No idea what a precision even looked like.
I got it for 50.00 cuz it looked Kool , took it home , plugged it in my plastic amplifier got nothin , no sound at all.
took it to Freds music , that's when I found out I bought a 70 fretless P bass .
That Meant nothing to me .it didn't work that's what I knew
I sold it to the dude working at Fred's for exactly what I paid for it a few hours ago. 50.00

I used to regret trading off my fotoflame Precision, which was a really nice bass. I have another Precision now, which has resolved the regret.

I've owned 34 over the last 31 years and currently have 14. After my first Roscoe was stolen, I went on a buying/trading/selling odyssey trying to find something that I liked enough to take its empty throne as my number one. Eventually landed on the Benevente that I used for about 5 years before finding my second Roscoe. Then I hung up my spurs for a while and didn't really play much for nearly a decade. During that time I gradually sold off basses as I needed the money for other things and couldn't justify having them when I wasn't playing. The only bass that survived that purge was Roscoe #2, the Dingwall Combustion, and the SX (because it was in pieces). Since, I've started diversifying my collection to cover a bunch of different sounds and that make me play differently.

Italicized are gone and bold are still with me.

The one I miss the most is my first Roscoe. I bought it from Steve at Superbass.net in the early 2000s. It was my first really nice bass and the first one to ever really feel like "home" for me. I left it in my car while I ran in to shower in between a daytime gig and an afternoon gig and when I came out about 90 mins later, it and my MTD Kingston were gone as well as my first gen iPod, haha.

I would love to get my hands on the Benevente, the Reverend, the Cirrus, and the Devon again to see if they are as good as my memories.
