Tough choice but my '73 Musicmaster aka: Chopper. Plays great, sounds great, weighs 7.25 lbs, and i always get compliments on the pickguard. Many sick grooves had been laid down with this bass.

I still own and enjoy a few prior favorites, but for about five years now it has been my '98 Lakland 4-94. Everything about that bass from feel to balance to tone to design to materials to craftsmanship, makes me smile and play with conviction. Fine instrument.
Wish I could take credit for it, as I’m extremely happy with them, but the previous owner replaced the active Fender electronics with EMG actives and what I believe to be an EMG BTC pot. When I bought it, I planned on replacing them with Seymour-Duncan guts, but after some quality time, instantly became an EMG fan.
My only hang-up was that the original electronics had a 4-knob (1-concentric) config, the EMG had 3. My OCD couldn’t let that empty hole stand, so I installed a dummy EMG pot/knob in the empty spot. I call it the Mojo knob, it goes to 11.
It's a rock monster with rounds, the MFD is so powerful and wide spectrum, bright.
I think due, in part to the wider sensing area and the wide coil, it has more "meat" to the D/G than a typical split coil.
My answer would evolve with age, as I would change with age. One answer would be 5, 10 or 15 years ago, the other now, and probably a third one in a couple of years.

My favourite is always the newest one (until the GAS is too strong and the next one is coming in). I had a new-string-day on saturday, changing and swapping strings on 4 of my basses and I found out that I loved them all and that I did not need another bass. The 7 I got was more than enough.
Sure enough, last night a pearl blue EBMM Sterling 4H 2005 was up for sale and boom. Yet another one for the rack. And I bet that one will be my favourite for at least a week when it arrives!

Maybe the Longhorn in my profile pic. It had a little fret buzz and a small chip in the rosewood bridge. A few months ago I replaced the bridge and put flats on it. If feels and sounds great so far but haven't had a chance to play it "live" yet. I hope the flats mix well with a couple of loud guitars.
I like the small size, low weight, and skinny neck. I like the lipsticks too. They look wimpy put put out more than I expected.

1/3 Of the 20 or so basses I currently own, I always come back to my 2001 American Vintage 57 RI P-Bass.
