I've owned several great basses over the years and still have a few of them. I know it's difficult to single out one bass that you might consider your favorite but just wondering if you had one choice what would it be? For me it's my 1995 German Warwick Fortress One Masterman. It's the easiest playing and best sounding bass of the 30 or so basses that i have owned.View attachment 4126578 It would be the last one that i would ever sell.

I am lucky to have several vintage and unique basses but this one wins the title of My Favourite Bass hands down. It's a Line 6 Variax 700 from the early 2000's. In addition to looking good (I think) it plays better than any bass I have ever played, and I don't say that lightly. It's a modelling bass with a couple of dozen basses "inside" including a Ricky, several Fender P and J basses, some Gibsons, a Hofner beatle bass, a Music Man, a couple of synths, 8-and 12-string basses (I use the 12 a lot when gigging because it has a huge tone) and, my favourite, a Kay M-1 stand-up bass. The Variax has frets, so you have to alter your fingering a bit to make sure you don't do any long slides where you can hear them, but other than that I'd be hard pressed to tell it isn't the real thing. I've seen them sell for way less that $1000 (I paid $700 for mine, used) and I can't imagine better value than that. I've heard people say that the sounds aren't perfect reproductions of the various basses and playing the 700 head to head with the basses it models will reveal differences. I own or have owned most of these basses and in a playing context whatever differences there may be would not be detectable by any but the fussiest ears.

Another Warwick fan here. I love my 1994 Warwick Thumb NT5 with an Aguilar OBP3 pre. Admittedly the weight and centre of gravity (neck dive) could be better but it plays and sounds great no matter with what band/style of music im playing.

Aaarg... I've been trying to pick a favorite for YEARS.... My spector NS-2a has the absolute perfect feel and comfort, but is sometimes lacking a little bit of tightness in the mix - especially the highs can get a little bland when boosted too much. In contrast my NS-4cr has such a tight and powerful sound that sits perfectly in the mix, with crisp highs that just shimmer and shine both in live situations and on recordings (Stainless frets; stainless strings, rock-hard maple, oh my!). Although it just doesn't quite have that 'extension of my body' feel that my NS-2a provides... Both are awesome axes in their own respect, but outshine each other on complete opposite sides of the spectrum. If I'd have to pick only one in terms of trade-off, I would have to go with the NS-4cr; it is just such a tight instrument. But boy does that ns-2a have that magic feel that I haven't found in any other bass that I've owned...

i bought that bass when i was 16 years old. that was 54 years ago. i paid $160 for it with a hard case. at the time i didn't like it so i sold it to Eric Weissberg. one of the biggest mistakes bass mistakes i ever made.
