I had a DMZ5000 for the longest time. I played it a lot. After thrashing around as I did, the body developed a crack that ran through out the body. From the neck pocket to the end pin. I'm shure if you slammed it hard enough it would split in two. Well, I always wanted a LP bass but felt that they a little to big in the body. I wanted one more close to the size of a guitar. So, I had a Luthier build this body. I made it a piezo only bass because I didn't want to spoil the look of the wood. Eventually, when my luthier skills get good enough, I am going to put Variax electronics into it.
After 40 years of playing bass, it comes down to these two. If I had to choose one, no question, I'd choose the BB.

It's an old SB-1 with an L1000 neck! I saw it in the Talkbass classifieds and agonized over it but it sold. It came up again not long after and I snagged it. Came with flats. Love it. I have no recordings of it. Weird. I had a hard time finding recordings of old SB-1s. Here's the sale thread..... Oh--and your jealousy makes it all worthwhile! SOLD - Vintage G&L bass

That explains it - I've never seen an SB-1 with that type of pickup, or control plate.
Very cool indeed.
I am new to G&L myself. That's the way the SB1 started out. I'm sure someone around here can fill us in on when G&L switched to a different pickup and control set up.
Ha ha, I guess I've been using an Ashdown head with a Mark Bass 4x10 I like quite a bit but probably only room for my trusty crusty bass Rockman and some headphones
I recently let go of an 83 SB1 .

I've had a lot of great basses over the years, but in the short time I've owned this bass I've really bonded with it. Its a mod shop Fender I had built last Oct/Nov. The tone and playability are amazing!
I've wondered what it would be like with round wounds but I'm enjoying it so much with flats!
My favorite bass ever was a short scale POS Kingston my father bought me when I was 14. That bass got me started into this thing we call music. Believe it or not, it plays and sounds decent despite being refinished several times.
Might very well be my Ibanez GSRM20 Mikro Bass, though I like my old main and first bass ever the Aria Pro II Laser Electric Classic a lot too, one of the last models that was made at the legendary Matsumoku factory in Japan, before they moved their production to Korea, and loved the Jerry Jones Longhorn that I once owned, but was stupid enough to sell, which I still regret.
For some reason I just really have bonded with my Mikro, like no other bass I have owned before, even if most people would consider it a lesser bass compared to the other 2 mentioned, and certainly the Rickenbacker 4003 that I ended up hating (looked and sounded great, which was why I bought it in the first place, but just couldn't get along with how it felt to play on).
It's even one of the early ones made in China, from before Ibanez moved their production to Indonesia at the Cort factory, but it had as good as perfect fretwork right from factory, at least good enough that I can get my preferred 1,9mm action at 12th fret on the low E string and about 1,5mm on the high G string without any fret buzz whatsoever, and after I upgraded the pickups it sounds amazing as well.
Here it is, just 28,6 scale, mahogany body, maple neck, rosewood fretboard with 22 medium frets, and a DiMarzio Model P P pickup wired directly to the output jack socket, with the J, from the previously installed EMG Geezer Butler P/J set, still sitting there but disconnected and lowered considerably :
I even gave it a name, which I usually don't do: "Dud Bottomfeeder".

These are most of my current dozen....my favorites are the Rickenbacker Cheyennes I and II,
and my GL JB2.

Tough question. In the passive dept I'd probably say my Roscoe Beck IV. But there are several close contenders.
For an active bass "at the moment"...this Heartfield DR is getting a lot of attention. Not super versatile but what it does, it does great.

#6 has surprisingly became my "#2" so to speak...It just sounds so fat, yet defined with the 35" scale and the neck is so broken in...I got this bass for a song (granted it needed some work), I did not get this part of my endorsment this was an older one I bough on TB for a fraction of what it is worth and now I can't imagine not having it.I'm simply unable to produce the amount of drool that collection deserves.

This bass actually in the inspiration for a new model coming out this year for Lull.

These basses are total sleepers...I still have a AP-5 that I'm keeping.
