I think it’s the most playable 6 I’ve ever owned. I love the figured maple top & bird’s eye fretboard!

Your favorite bass, ever?

I owned the prototype Orion. Lost it in a fire. I still have the Orion prototype Baritone that was originally owned by Steve Miller Though! Alembics are so awesome.
The bass I miss the most is probably my Lakland DJ5 with a John East preamp (marginally beat my ‘75 Fender Precision and 2006 MM Stingray4 HS). But. This is the true heir to the throne, although a new addition, it’s really the «affordable bass of my dreams»!

Massive single cut that enables me to reach the 24th fret (even on the B-string) with ease! Wonderful playability and the bartolini pickups make it sound absolutely amazing!

I really appreciate the folks that give a short story or explanation. At the very least give us the name/model. But year and features are even better.
I really like the pictures too, there are some beautiful instruments on this thread. But I am not smart enough to know what most of these basses are from a picture alone.
For us less enlightened/ignorant players wanting to learn something from this forum crammed full of VERY experienced musicians, I hope that future posts keep this in mind.
I personally have only owned about six basses and have played a few others in music shops, I prefer fender, probably due to familiarity and admitted ignorance.
My search is long from over, but my favourite thus far is a modded and hacked up Mexican P (now PJ) with an old J neck. It also has sentimental value. I'll attach a picture when I get it back from the shop. Also really enjoy the Mustangs. Have a blast everytime I pick one up. But have never owned one for some reason.
Thanks to everyone for sharing their vast knowledge and opinions on the instrument and those who play it very well.
The only thing I might possibly change on that bass would be to switch out the stock tuners (Gotohs, I'm assuming) with Gotoh Res-o-lite gb350s.
My 2008 Schecter 004. I picked this up several years ago from a guitar player who thought he wanted to try playing bass. He maybe played it a dozen times as it looked like new when I got it. Paid $350 with a hard case. I have bought and sold many other basses since I got it but this Schecter has stuck around and became my number one gigging bass.
You prefer the Gotoh Res-o-lites over US Hipshots? I was considering Gold because of the aesthetics with the deep, warm body stain.....

My favorite is my Yamaha BX-5 1984 Japan made. It took me 24 years searching for this bass. I've had Fender Pbass, Yamaha BBG5-A and Yamaha TRB 5ll. Found this on a local market in 2018, started searching for this since 1994 after i tried a black Yamaha BX-5 from guys who used to play in Cruise ships. Got this in pretty bad shape with a single OEM MM style pickups which i replaced with a custom wound noiseless neck and bridge pickups from a local luthier. Repainted lightly to see the battle scars it went through. Recently received a trade offer with a Fender Jazz Bass 1992, but nope. No amount of money or instrument will replace the years i longed for this bass.
I started playing bass when our bassist walked out of practice in 1967 (8th grade!). I was playing rhythm guitar but we needed a bass worse than a rhythm. So the next day, Dad took me to the pawn shop and for a whopping $35 we bought an Apollo MIJ violin style bass. I played that baby for 30 years and she never let me down. I've had her apart, adjusted, cleaned and repaired ever since. Still have it, and still play it. Strictly from a sentimental perspective, it's my favorite and she still calls my name.
Once I could afford to buy a 'better' bass, I was convinced I wanted a Ric. I've always liked the concept of neck-through delivering a better transfer of vibration than bolt on's. Fender wasn't even in my vocabulary. In 2001 I did the deed and picked up a 4003b in fireglo. Despite the fact that the Ric is a very nice build, and I was able to get the setup just right, I've never bonded with it. It's a beautiful bass, but probably doesn't have 30 hours of play time since new. It's going on Reverb in the next few weeks so it can find a home where it is appreciated. It deserves some love.
In 2004, I went hunting for my new 'better' bass and decided I'd see what this P-bass-love thing was all about. Since then, I have accumulated several basses and a stand-up bluegrass thumper. I found this '99 American Standard P and was immediately impressed. I also have it's '99 Jazz twin (almost...it has a maple FB) that I thought would be better suited since I have long thin fingers. It turns out I like the extra room on the board of the P. Others include a Gibson EB5 and an Ibanez SR655.
Ultimately, my completely stock P gets 95% of the love. The others get time when recording and I'm looking for something different, but the P is on the main guitar stand by my side at every live gig. I have the Jazz, SR and EB5 on a group stand side-stage for backup and specific songs as needed. Now I get the P-bass-love thing.

I have three that would be
impossible to part with . This one was built back in ‘87.
