The Jag XKE was simply perfect. Other than mechanically, of course. But no car, not even an Italian, is as much pure sex as the E.

With that said, I'm a bass player and I need to carry gear. Which is why Harold's Jag converstion is my ultimate.

i had a guy try to sell me a used one just like the green ragtop around 75/76,....6 grand was a lot of dough then and iirc close to market value....sigh....but looking back, a v12 with six su's would have been a nightmare to maintain,and i was prone to driving really fast then.....i had a single su on an old panhead for a bit and it never worked right...found an old bendix and it was heaven... i still curse su and lucas electrics before retiring every day...but i'd sure like to own a jag like that green one now...

True Story: I had a brand new BMW 325i. It was an '87 or '88, can't remember. Anyway the throttle, which was purely mechanical, liked to stick. The car had fuel injection so no carb, but whatever part that throttle cable was moving on the engine liked to stick. It scared the hell out of me. The dealer seemed nonchalant about it, did fix it. What are the chances I had the only BMW 325i with that problem?

Point being mechanical throttles, even ones made by/for BMW, were never perfect.

BMW is hardly what I'd call "perfect", but that's a topic for a different thread.

I've been a professional wrench for 31 years and I can count on one hand the number of throttle cables I've ever replaced, and I'll still have two fingers left over. Two of them were on my own lifted trucks, which became an issue because of the extreme body lifts and the third was a 29 Ford pickup, where the throttle cable melted because of a bad battery ground.

Otoh I've changed dozens of drive by wire throttle bodies in the last five years. Whoever thought that replacing a $10 cable with $100's worth of sensors and electric motors is an idiot, imo.

The two vehicles I desire:-


(1) A chauffeured limousine......limo with bar, t.v. and all the goodies. I don't care about urban driving...it all looks the same......rather be doing something else.

(2) An 18-wheeler tractor cab. Like a Kenworth or Peterbilt etc. Would give me a sense of power to be going down the road knowing that if you hit me you'll be splattered all over the bumper like a bug. Also much better view riding that high up off the ground........and if I'm going somewhere I can pull over and make myself a coffee etc in the sleeper cab (which in mine would have everything).

There's nowhere around where I live you could open up a Porsche or whatever.

You can outrun a copcar but you can't outrun their radio.

Love my 89 Celebrity. 3.1 V6, 4 speed auto, almost 300k and still gets 35 mpg on the highway. Would drive it anywhere. Would be better as an 87 VR wagon but still with the 3.1.

66 Toronado, first American full bodied production front wheel drive car. Also the GMC motorhome that shared the same drivetrain.

Too many to choose a 3rd. But I've gotten more compliments on my 91 Tracker stick than anything. People saying they used to have one, how much fun it was, how it would go anywhere.

To be honest, I'm not really much of a car fan. I've been riding motorcycles pretty much every day for 50 years now (50 years this month, in fact), and I've been car-less many more times than I've been bike-less. But, if I just have to choose 3, it would be these...
1. '33 -'36 Morgan Super Sport like these two, with the Barrel-back body, and the 998cc water-cooled Matchless motor. There were still a few of them running around when I was a kid living in England, and I've always been fascinated by them...
2. 1915 Stutz Bearcat. Mainly because my paternal grandfather had one. He absolutely loved the thing, but my grandmother made him sell it. The idiot who bought it, promptly drove it off the Ben Franklin Bridge into the Delaware River. Gramps missed the Stutz 'till the day he died...
3 '23 Bucket-T hot rod like this one. What the hell.. ain't gonna drive it much, so why not?

Porsche 914 - Not bloated like some. There are some remarkably ugly cars with the Porsche tag, IMO.

Unimog - serious ground clearance, 4WD and PTO - what's not to like?

I always said if I had a boatload of cash I would get an M3. I still would.

Ford Mustangs also hold a special place in my heart. My 2006 GT was my favorite.

And to round it out for pure crazy, I'd go with a ridiculous 90s Dodge Viper. That was my dream car in highschool.

There is a kit available to swap a small block Chevy into the 914. That would make it reliable!
I think that is one of my dream cars. I love the 914, but with a big V8 it would be ridiculous.
On the other hand, Beetles are easier to find than 914s, and I think there are V8 kits for those, too, even though they are ugly, stick way out the back, and just do wheelies. And then, I would still be fine with a good running aircooled flat four. So, I would need two Beetles.

My dream garage would be:

One hot-hatch sort of thing. Could be a ur-Quattro (or an A1 Quattro, were such a thing not subject to the 25-year rule), or a Focus RS, or something Cosworth-ish Focus, or Golf R or Subaru STi if all else failed. I'd be open to creative suggestions, because this dream garage assumes the money to have a mechanic on retainer.

One wagon-y sort of thing. First choice would be a Volvo 445 (Duett). They're hard to come by, so I'd be ok with one that wasn't in pristine shape because it'd be my daily driver anyway. Then of course the decision would be to give it more modern running gear knowing that that could only decrease reliability... but it would have a bit more scoot.

My 2003 Ford Ranger. Base base base model - rubber floor, vinyl seat, AM radio, no AC - well ok, maybe AC would be great, considering where I now live. The thing was an economy car with a big trunk. I put cool wheels and a better audio system and a spray-in bedliner in it, and sold it for more than I paid for it five years down the road. I'd love to have it back.

Oh, and one more thing: I'd like to live on a nicely-paved road with twists and hills, and I'd like my neighbor - the one who lives farther from the main road by at least half a mile - to have a Jag F-type (with the V8, of course). If my neighbor owns it, I get to enjoy both the visuals and the audio from where they're best: outside the car. I also wouldn't need to pay insurance on it.

Is this too much to ask?
