Your Favorite Round Wound Strings for Jazz Bass ?

Played D'Addario Pro-Steels for years with good results, then DR Marcus Millers, now DR Super Bright Steel and Nickel. All on EADGC strung Warmoth Jazz 5er.

the Dunlops are a great value, but i have to say that the DR MM strings really feel and play great.

What is your favorite Round Wound string for Jazz Bass? Sound, Feel, Consistency, etc...

For years I've been using DR,ussually Marcus Miller sig on my jazz basses. Then I switch to La Bella nickels and I was amazed. They are really nice,kinda "dry" but very good feeling and sounding strings for jazz bass. Now after many years of neglecting them, I bought Ernie Ball and I am very happy! To me they has best B string in the business! Very tight,juicy and clear.

anyone like D'addario XL170s? I've had them on my jazz awhile and they seem to go dead fairly quickly plus they don't get alot of love around here any reason for this?

I am using them on my P bass, I love them after few weeks, much better than new. They has nice bottom end on my P bass and also they feel very good! Not for jazz bass tho...

I like GHS Boomers 105 - 85 - 65 - 45 on my Carvin SB 4000 (Pretty much a standard J bass) plus they come in High C 5 string packs and 4 string double packs

Noticed this at the downtown club gig Friday night - QSC wedges. @10 hours on the nickel set. Will boil before Saturdays winery gig.

Saying you play funk, disco, smooth jazz / variety dance band doesn't specify what you're looking for in tone, tension, and overall feel.

D'Addario ETB92M, and ETB92 Nylon Tapewounds are my choice.

I do not suscribe to the idea that all Jazz Basses are born equal and sound similar. A set may be great in one and not work in another bass. I tried many different brands and styles in the various Jazz Basses I have owned. I'd say definitely Stainless in a dark sounding alder/rosewood bass. My fav being DR Fat Beams or Hi Beams or the new Dunlop Superbright SS. IMO the worst strings for a dark sounding bass are D'Addario XL's.
On a brighter sounding bass such as ash/maple I use my favorite Nickel strings, EB Slinkies or Dunlop Superbright Nickel but I switch to the SS forementioned if I want to really cut through or slap.
In general though, I favor stainless strings for a passive bass.

EFX165 Flex Steel Bass because they sound closest to what Rotosound Swing Bass strings sounded at the end of the seventies, "if you were lucky enough to get hold of a good set that is"!

DR Pure Blues (my current goto) or Roto Solo 55s. Either will pull out everything a JB has going for it tone-wise IMO.

Or GHS Pressurewounds if you want a little hint of that mellower flatwound mojo, but still want some decent top. Not a good choice if you like really bright strings.

I haven't found a flatwound that I really like for a JB. So I can't help you there. YMMV.

Have you tried the new EB cobalt flats? I have a set on my black Jazz with the rosewood board, and they sound awesome.

I have but didn't like them. Which surprised me since I've heard so many good things about them. Maybe it's just the bass (a PB) I tried them on. But to my ears, they just sounded overly bright and a little harsh. I think part of it might be I have trouble getting my head to accept the notion of a bright sounding flat string - so it could very well just be a mental thing with me.

I'm anxious to hear what's said about this comparison since I have also been using the prosteels for years and just recently bought flexsteels that I haven't put on yet.
