Michael "Mo" Morales, TN.

Matthew Gruenenberg (? or maybe it's Gruenberg?), used to play bass in a band from Boston called Life On Earth in the mid-1980s that also featured Reeves Gabrels on guitar.

(Before that Matthew played in The Dark, which had some local success.)

He played a Spector NS-2 through a biamped G-K/JBL rig with a ton of compression, and did all this cool slapping/tapping stuff that was incredibly idiosyncratic and angular without ever sounding like wanking or NAMM-Show athletics...wasn't really "funky" so much as "spikey", but very infectious and danceable.

Someone told me he later added a Pedulla Buzz Bass to his arsenal, and though I never heard him use that it really blows my mind to imagine his unique style & technique executed on a fretless bass!

I just posted in another thread....I remember taking lessons from a Matt in Boston in the early 80s. I recall his band was called The Dark and I saw him play a few times in that period of time. I recall him having a Gibson Ripper....taught me some good stuff and I enjoyed his band. Wonder where he is today...

Mark White of the Spin Doctors. Everybody knows the band but nobody ever notices the bass player because he's so low in the mix. He's an incredible bass player. Right up there with Bootsy in terms of talent I'd say.

For a while in the '00s Matt owned a combination woodshop/rehearsal space in Hoboken NJ and played upright bass in some rootsy, alt-country bands. But about a year or two ago I heard he divested his interest in the shop/space and moved back to New England (CT perhaps?) so I've completely lost touch with him since.

Yeah, I remember him playing a Ripper in The Dark. I still own their two albums on vinyl!

Jesse Murphy is a New York City-based bass player. He played on John Scofield's Überjam album and was a member of Brazilian Girls. He is also a member of the "Love Trio", a band that "sprang directly out of the Nublu club scene" in NYC.

I can't believe someone beat me to this one. But yes, Roy Cox of the Bubble Puppy. They were the first concert I ever saw. Another one I like is Leon Medica of LeRoux.

Don't really watch much youtube of bass players. As far as people that get little or no mention in the usual musician circles that play in bands that I love... Lou Barlow of Dinosaur Jr/Sebadoh/Folk Implosion. He wasn't one of my early influences, but has become a pretty big influence over the years. Dude can do everything.
