Your favourite unknown bassist?

The cover band I've been with for a few years did some original work several years ago when they (my guitarist and singer, a husband and wife duo) had a different band, in California. Their previous bassist, Gilbert something, wrote some pretty incredible stuff, and is what sold me on playing with them. Very melodic, Beatles-esque stuff, stunning in it's use of melody and space.

Not sure exactly how unknown he is, but I am a big fan of Steve Burgess of the Screamin Cheetah Wheelies.

Great groove and a rock solid bottom end formed with drummer Terry Thomas. I have been to a bunch of shows and never seen a girl that didn't shake her butt to the groove of Steve's bass.

One of the most underrated band I have ever seen or heard.

I would not call Marlowwe DK unknown. Most bass players know of this cat...but he is great.

Hands down it's got to be my cousin,Gary Noe. A graduate from Marshall University in String Bass. That's the person that got me into playing bass. Excellent funk and jazz player. It's too bad he doesn't play on a regular basis anymore. What a waste of talent.

Three players spring to mind for me:

Whoever played on the Cameo-Parkway records in the early-60s ("Wah Watusi" by the Orlons and Chubby Checker's early output).

Whoever played on "Can I Change My Mind" by Tyrone Davis (probably a Chicago guy).

Whoever played on "Jungle Fever" by the Chakachas. You can't cut that bass line with a chainsaw.

The guy from Consider The Source....This guy is incredibly technical but really musical with his technicality which is really hard to do in my opinion.

Saw these guys in Atlanta last night. Um, holy cr@p. All three band members are amazing, but the bassist really stood out. Probably the most ferocious player I've ever seen live. He did tons of slapping and double-thumbing, but also had a really deep fingerstyle groove. He plays a pretty sweet Fodera 4-string.

Alain Caron is not unknown, but a lot of folks in the US do not seem to know of him. He is my favorite pro by a mile.
