my favorite bassist/vocals is Avion Blackman of Christafari, when they came and have shows in our country i was so starstruck.. haha, she inspired me take bass seriously.
of course there's flea, scottbasslesson, dmanlimius, the french 12 string bassist guy.

There's a guy on youtube named Chris Khalife who has some of the best bass covers on there, in my opinion. His tone is superb, and he makes even some of the most uninteresting basslines fun to watch/listen to (not to mention great stage(?) presence).

for me it is:
1. Dave Cribbs - the guy who plays bass in one of my bands (Go Robot, Go!). Not only a great player, but also a genius songwriter. I might be biased, but still
2. I feel like Joe Dibiase from Fates Warning always sort of got overlooked
3. also feel that Joe Lally gets overlooked too

One of my big favorite not-too-well-known bassists is Louis Satterfield. Anyone old enough to remember "Rescue Me" by Fontella Bass will know who I'm talking about.....great bass line!
Nice choice. I'm a fan of Pinback, and his style is so weird and inventive ... I don't like his tone much, but I like watching him play.
Gary Thain from the early 70's Uriah Heep and Mars Cowling from the late 70's Pat Travers band, both amazing players
Tony Scalzo of Fastball (king of pop rock bass and great singer-songwriter), Ryan Monro of the Cat Empire(equally awesome on electric and upright), Dolph de Borst from the Datsuns (great rocker and awesome singer) and Ronald "Stepper" McQueen of Steel Pulse (the sweetest reggae bass player in my book)

I'll second Michael League from Snarky Puppy. I've seen them live many times, and his P-bass tone just sinks into your chest. His playing is so tasteful and musical. He knows how to use space better than anyone I've ever heard. The fills he throws in are just nasty. And to top it all off, he's great on keyboard bass as well.

Lars "Leari" Ljungberg of The Ark is the reason I picked up the bass again. Once I put in their album "In Lust We Trust" I drove straight to guitar center & bought a cheapo Bronco bass just so I could play that bass line over n over n over
I completely agree that Joe Lally gets overlooked. His basslines in Fugazi's music are some of my favorites. I also reccomend his solo stuff for some great lines.
I was never really into Fates Warning but I used to work with Joe Dibiase, he was a fun guy to work with.
