Your Gig $ - Who Gets It?

Primarily, I take the money I make from gigging and give it straight to my wife (she manages the money). If I need something gear related or want to just blow some money on loading my Starbucks card then I tell my wife that I am keeping a certain amount, or all of it. She lets me make the decision regarding my gig money (I gig every week on top of my 8-5 M-F job) and I 95% of the time give it to her to use for our family (I have a 7 month old and a 14 year old...both expensive).

I don't get it why do you guys give all your money to your wives. What do they do with the money they earn keep it?

I have a fiance but I wouldn't turn over all my earnings to her. It sounds like y'all are asking your wives for permission to spend money you worked hard for. I don't get why?

Its not that complex you have family expenses you make enough to pay those, what you have left you save, invest and a percentage you spend to enrich your lives

Normally it's mine but if I have a good payday I'll break the wifee off. If things are tight we use it for gas, weekly expenses etc.

Just wait until you've been married for a while' you'll get it. :D

Really, yeah, everybody needs a little something to call their own, a reward for their hard work, her as well as you. You treat yourself to gear-n-beer, she buys, I don't know, shoes? But for the most part, you pool your resources and work as a team. A little bit like putting your gig pay back into a band fund instead of keeping it.

Being a single college student, most of my cut of gig earnings goes to me, but I will usually put $20-$40 (depending on the gig) into the band checking account to pay for merch, CDs, studio time, gas, van rentals, etc. Luckily, only the 3 of us (out of 6) who are financially responsible have access to the checking account- it's been a good arrangement thus far.

Spend it. When I get paid in cash, I give it to my spouse. She tends to handle more cash business, like sending the kids to the store or the farmers market. I don't like to carry cash because I spend it.

Checks (i.e., most of my gig income) go straight into the bank account.

YMMV. In my family, it doesn't matter who worked for what money. We have a household to manage and kids to raise, and it's a joint effort.

I don't have ask for permission because we trust one another not to spend what we can't afford.

With that said, I make sure that my gig income covers my gear expenses, not out of necessity, but as a matter of pride and good business sense.

Actually, for most middle class families, it is that complex, and then some, because:

1. We often don't make enough to pay all of our expenses, especially when you consider "expenses" to include managing risks such as health care costs, unemployment, college tuition, and retirement.

2. There is no guaranteed formula for how much a family needs to save and invest.
